Corona slowed motorcycle manufacturers: plants in Europe are starting again

Production stop due to measures against Corona
Manufacturers are starting again

A number of motorcycle manufacturers had to stop their production due to the measures taken against the Covid-19 pandemic. After the Europe-wide lockdown, the factories are back to business – after all, the dealers will need supplies soon.

Ducati started in Bologna: the plant in the Borgo Panigale district has been gradually ramping up again since April 27. The Italians are building their new models, primarily the super powerful Streetfighter V4, for which many orders have been received from Germany in particular. Those who can, however, stay with Ducati, as in all other European motorcycle plants, still in the home office.

Start of production at BMW on May 4th

Shortly after Ducati, the electric motorcycle manufacturer Energica from neighboring Modena also went back online, the order books are reportedly full. On May 4th, the BMW plant in Spandau followed in Germany, where production of the R 1250 GS and R 1250 RT had to be postponed for the time being, as the throttle valve bodies from the Italian supplier were still missing. From May 13th, GS and RT will also roll off the production line again.

Also on May 4th, Moto Guzzi, Aprilia, MV Agusta, Moto Morini and Fantic reopened in northern Italy, as did Piaggio and Benelli in central Italy. Yamaha reopened its European plants in Bologna, Italy (Minarelli) and in Saint-Quentin, France (MBK), where the much sought-after Tenere 700 rolls off the assembly line, again between May 4th and 5th. Triumph is a special case: the British only produce a few motorcycles at their headquarters in Hinckley in Great Britain, most of the machines now come from Thailand. According to Triumph, production there continued without a break, although it was temporarily slowed down as global demand had fallen due to the lockdown.

Honda is waiting until mid-May

Honda is waiting until May 18 to restart its European plant in Atessa in central Italy, where the Japanese primarily build scooters for the European market. KTM / Husqvarna won’t even start again until May 25th: The Austrians, it is said from the factory in Mattighofen, do not want to restart until the supply chains are stable again.

It is precisely these supply chains that will count in the coming days and weeks: In order for motorcycle production to function smoothly again, all components, from the brakes to the wheels and engine parts to indicators and hoses, must arrive at the plants on time – with the suppliers in one real pyramid in turn depend on their sub-suppliers. A report in MOTORRAD 11/2020 – from next Friday at the kiosk – provides information on how things are going with replenishment in the motorcycle industry.
