Three-cylinder in a fun bike outfit

“Beam us up, Scotty! We are in an absolutely hostile environment. Temperatures close to freezing, continuous rain and fog with visibility of sometimes less than 20 meters. Get us out of here! Right away!”

But Scotty doesn’t hear. Either the battery of his projector is currently empty, or our emergency call cannot penetrate the cloud cover. So we are left to our own devices and have to find our way through the earthly restoration. We are two handfuls of journalists who answered the call to check out the first Benelli TreK with the new, small engine on a tour of the Black Forest. In this case, small means 899 cubic centimeters instead of 1131 cubic centimeters. These are achieved by using a different crankshaft and modified connecting rods. Overall, the stroke shrinks by 12.8 millimeters, the bore is still 88 millimeters. The cylinder head, like the rest of the engine, could remain unchanged, apart from the modified intake camshaft. And that’s just as well.

Because there are currently only a few such emotional drives as the somewhat coarse-looking, massive three-cylinder. Even the cold start is an exciting experience: does it start? or not? He lets himself be asked, but eventually succumbs to the advances of the starter. The throaty, roaring sound is no different from its big sister and is suitable for getting the blood flowing. Incidentally, that of the neighborhood, because only after a few minutes of warm-up time does a reaction in the form of an increase in speed occur when you turn the throttle. With low single-digit temperatures and sometimes horizontal lashing rain, the journalle gropes its way over the course. The smooth throttle response and the linear power output make it easier to concentrate on the slippery surface. However, high load change reactions, caused by a lot of play in the drive train and the very high manual clutch force, cloud the picture. The driver’s back, on the other hand, is clouded by the dirt kicked up by the rear wheel, which finds its way to the helmet.

Apart from that, the Benelli brave under these adverse circumstances. The suspension, which is barely any adjustment option except for the rear spring preload, does not respond particularly well due to the cold. The easy turning in and the neutral and uncritical driving behavior compensate for this. The mounted Dunlop Roadsmart tires build enough grip even under these conditions? anticipatory driving style required. An ABS that is currently not yet in the Benellli program would still be helpful. But even without it, all horses and riders can safely reach the restoration, albeit slightly red-nosed. Where they ponder over caffeinated coffee, pork schnitzel and grumpy bags about whether they should pull the ears of deaf Scotty. It is said to have worked miracles for Spock. Speaking of Spar-TreK: Compared to the 1130, the 899 is over 1600 euros cheaper. In return, the customer does without 14 HP, 33 Nm, the power button for different mappings in the cockpit and a cover on the rear wheel, called a splash guard. The latter was the only one that went missing under the circumstances described above.
