Anyone looking for electric drives in the current Ducati range will only end up with a mountain bike with an electric motor (Ducati MIG RR), which was presented at EICMA 2018. Soon, however, this search could yield further results.

Students from the University of Bologna start an E-Series with Ducati support.

Ducati boss Claudio Domenicali has now said during a motostudent event of the team from the University of Bologna in Aragon, Spain, “The future will be electric” and Ducati is not far from the production of an electric model. The third place of the university team, which is supported by the Ducati Foundation, was celebrated in the electric class of the Motostudent series. In 2017, the managing director of Ducati Western Europe, Edouard Lotthe, announced that Ducati was working on an electric motorcycle and an electric scooter. At that time, however, Ducati did not speak of a series start before 2021.

Which model will come and especially when, Domenicali then no longer gave any details. There have been several references to an electric motorcycle made by the Italians. There was Domenicali’s test drive on a Hypermotard converted with a zero electric motor in Thailand or the Ducati Zero Design Concept from 2017 by the Milan Polytechnic of Design, which was developed in collaboration with Ducati.

The Italians could get support on the subject of electric drives from the parent company Volkswagen. Both VW and Audi are currently working extensively on getting numerous models with electric drives on the road. The E-Golf and the E-Up are already available at VW, and the SUV E-Tron is about to be launched at Audi. The group is also currently investing heavily in its own battery cell production.
