Actually, from January 1, 2021, only motorcycles that comply with the Euro 5 standard will be allowed to be registered. Accordingly, the manufacturers try to sell all Euro 4 models as quickly as possible. The corona crisis torpedoed this project, especially at the start of the season, maintenance and service were still allowed during the lockdown, but the sale of new vehicles was suspended in many countries.

As for many other industries, the consequences of the lockdown are also grave for motorcycle manufacturers and dealers. Especially because the trade restrictions fell in the middle of the switch from Euro 4 to Euro 5 models. This means that the old Euro 4 vehicles actually have to be sold and registered by the end of 2020. After January 1, 2021, only new registrations of Euro 5 machines are permitted across Europe.

EU approves deadline extension

The European motorcycle manufacturer association ACEM had applied to the EU to extend the transition period from Euro 4 to Euro 5 by one year. For ACEM, it wasn’t just about selling, but also about production. Because certifying and approving a new motorcycle model for the EU has been a bureaucratic and lengthy show of strength for both manufacturers and the EU authorities. This process was also severely slowed down by the lockdown. In October 2020, the European Parliament then voted in favor of relieving the motorcycle manufacturers stricken by the corona pandemic. In 2021, more Euro 4 models than previously planned may be sold.

In order to show how many models in the current range in Germany are still at Euro 4, we have put together the corresponding motorcycles in the photo show. Perhaps one or the other would like to speculate on a daily admission or a possible sale at reduced prices.

Conclusion

In view of the delays in the lockdown, we think the extension of the deadline for the sale of Euro 4 motorcycles makes perfect sense. But postponing the production of Euro 5 models would also be justified, because the bureaucratic effort for EU approval is immense and time-consuming. Here, too, the lockdown delayed all processes.
