In Germany in 2019 a total of 165,496 motorized two-wheelers registered. That was 5.9 percent more than in 2018. And that too European two-wheeler market increased – compared to the previous year 2018 by a full eight percent (1,079,524 new registrations). The global trend is different, however, because the two-wheeler market fell by 2.7 percent. Expressed in absolute numbers: there were 60.1 million motorized two-wheelers in 2019, 1.6 million fewer than in the previous year. As I said, it wasn’t up to us.

In contrast, there were significant sales losses in India, the world’s largest two-wheeler market. New registrations here fell by 16.8 percent compared to the previous year. In contrast to Germany – and also Europe – we are talking about other dimensions here: 18.5 million motorized two-wheelers were newly registered in India last year, which is 3.1 million fewer than in 2018. The Chinese two-wheeler market cannot do that either oppose this, which in 2019 can show an increase of 1.3 million registrations compared to the previous year. A total of 16.3 million two-wheelers were registered in China last year.

Of the 60.1 million motorized two-wheelers worldwide, almost 26 million are scooters with a displacement of over 50 cm³. The German and also European motorcycle markets, which were up in 2019, do not have a major impact on the world balance sheet. The 4 largest markets are all in Asia.

Popular displacement classes

The most popular class in Germany is still the displacement class over 125 cubic. However, other motorized two-wheelers are in the lead worldwide. In first place the displacement class between 51 and 125 cubic meters. Around 70 percent of the two-wheelers newly registered worldwide in 2019 fall into this category. Around 30 percent have between 126 and 250 cm³ displacement.

Motorcycle market forecast for 2020

The 2.7 percent year-on-year decline in the two-wheeler market in 2019 will most likely look ridiculously small around this time next year. A double-digit decline is expected for the Chinese market. And even if the registrations in India are lagging behind this year due to the measures taken against the corona pandemic, the experts from Motorcycle Data (McD) expect a drop of over ten million units worldwide.
