Harley-Davidson Road King used advice
Reliable and extremely stable in value

For 20 years, the Harley-Davidson Road King has been proving that a motorcycle trimmed to look old cannot be a short-term fad, but a long-runner.

The list price is exactly 31,450 marks. So much to ask Harley-Davidson 1994 for the youngest old woman in the program. But who pays the list price, it can be a little more. You read that right: more! And we’re not talking about the Cuban or North Korean market here.

The new Harley-Davidson Road King sold out worldwide in a very short time in 1994, and in the MOTORRAD classifieds section 38,000 marks are required – and paid for – for a Straben-Konig contract. What seems a bit strange, the FLHR is not something revolutionary new, but actually just a stripped-down Electra Glide, which instead of a sweeping batwing fairing has a windshield that can be dismantled in a few simple steps and does without a topcase. It looks like the original model of the E-Glide from 1965, but it only produces 60 instead of 66 hp. An anachronism on two wheels.

Under-list price sell-off? Never!

But a very successful one, as the following years will show. The over-list-price madness will come to an end at some point, but there is a sale of under-list price for them Road King No way. From model year 1998, the original king will be given an even more retro-trimmed regent with the Harley-Davidson Road King Classic, who subsequently largely takes over the official duties. The attempt to turn the royal duo into a triumvirate from 2004 fails, however: The Road King Custom does not even begin to reach the numbers of its co-kings and is thrown out of the court in mid-2007. With all the old-style packaging, the Road King was and is always a thoroughly modern, absolutely reliable and extremely stable motorcycle. Long live the monarchy!

From 2008 to 2013 a 2007 model year Harley-Davidson Road King topped the MOTORRAD long-term test list: 50,000 trouble-free kilometers in the tough day-to-day editorial work – any questions about basic reliability? A leaky fuel gauge, screeching brakes and a vibration crack on the exhaust manifold, there was nothing more to complain about. And these quirks should also be history as part of the facelift since 2008/2009.

Keyword history: This should be of particular interest to Road King used buyers, because bikes that have spent their first life in the USA are often rental and / or accident-damaged machines. A missing windshield or another front fender are the first clues. It is best to have the vehicle identification number checked by an authorized dealer, everything is documented at Harleys. Also important: the tire check. Often the eternal but not very adhesive first rubbers are still mounted on a Harley-Davidson Road King.

Market situation

Behind the Street Glide, the Harley-Davidson Road King, especially as a Classic model, ranks second in the Harley Tourer pre-owned hit parade. So it is very popular and therefore still really expensive compared to other Harley Big Twins, even at an advanced age. Handicraft stalls with an obscure US or Poland past are available for less than 9,000 euros, but halfway serious offers are hardly available for less than ten mille. In return, machines with Evo engines or early TC88 change hands.

The model years 2004 to 2006 are in the middle of the price range. From first hand and with a manageable mileage, 13,000 to 14,000 euros are to be paid. No matter whether it is the Harley-Davidson Road King Standard, Classic or even the very rare Custom. The big jump in price is then in the 2009 model year, because around 3,000 euros more are paid for ABS, new frames and 180 rear tires. From 2009 onwards, the model year is relatively irrelevant, because the maintenance condition and mileage as well as the number of previous owners count more than the date of first registration.
