The Chinese Chongqing Group builds motorcycles up to 500 cubic meters under the Henjiang brand. The engine of the Dahaidao 500 comes like with the Voge models by Loncin, moves two pistons in four cycles, generates a good 44 hp at 8,500 tours from 471 cubic meters and pushes 40 Nm at 7,000 revolutions. When it comes to design, however, Henjiang does not take inspiration from China, but from Japan: At Honda and, in the case of the off-roader Dahaidao, directly from the Africa Twin.

Plagiarism is not a dirty word

The strong orientation in the design to the Honda Africa Twin could perhaps pass as plagiarism. The word plagiarism, or the moral charge behind it, is not used in China. In fact, it’s a compliment in this culture. If Honda comes and accuses plagiarism, the Chinese thinks: “Great, then I did my job well.”

Look me in the eye, Africa Twin. Nearly. This is the Dahaidao 500 GS Adv from Henjian.

Aside from the design, the Dahaidao is a surprisingly independent off-road motorcycle with many technical highlights. The little one comes from the factory with a steering damper under the fork bridge, and high-quality Pirelli studs on cross-spoke rims provide grip. The two tanks hold an impressive 39.7 liters: the main tank at the front holds 22.7 liters, the additional tank with 17 liters is located under the seat bench. That should be enough for well over 600 kilometers.

The large LCD display with a large amount of information complements the narrow on-board computer below.

The stately 7-inch TFT display with touchscreen function sits above a second, narrow on-board computer. Fun fact: the new Harley Pan America has nothing bigger on board with its 6.8-inch display. The traffic is recorded via the Henjiang and the two cameras mounted in the front and rear, and the video is read out via the USB slot on the side of the interior paneling.

In addition to engine speed and speed, the display also shows the gear engaged, the tire pressure, the weather, temperatures of the cooling water and the ambient air, an altimeter and the quality of the engine oil. The small on-board computer underneath also shows the fuel gauge, odometer and voltmeter.

Brakes from Spain

In addition to China and Japan, Spain also serves as a source for the Dahaidao 500: The brakes come from the Spanish specialist JJuan, whom KTM also trusts for the smaller machines. The hand pump, the foot pump and the radial brake calipers of the double disc at the front and the axial caliper on the rear wheel come from JJuan.

Chassis with a claim

The built-in USD fork offers 170 millimeters of spring travel and can be adjusted in preload, compression and rebound. Likewise, the shock absorber with the handwheel to adjust the preload and 165 millimeters of spring travel. Henjiang offers the Dahaidao in two versions, the only difference being the size of the front wheel: either 19 inches or 21 inches. Each soled with Pirelli tires.

Attention quality

The quality of individual components in Henjiang is sometimes frightening on the available images. Terrifyingly good: The cast aluminum swingarm could also be installed on a Japanese 500cc bike, the fork feet are milled, which you normally only see in the world championship and the Loncin engine has probably already been tried and tested a million times.

Availability and prices

Currently, no importer has accepted the brand, in China the Dahaidao is offered for the equivalent of 3,500 euros.

The established manufacturers must fear the Chinese?

Yes, the manufacturers from China have full tailwind and money does not matter.

China never learns passion, history and quality overnight.

Conclusion

the chinese motorcycle market can no longer be caught up in terms of the production and sale of motorcycles. One reason for this are models like the Dahaidao 500 from Henjiang: inexpensive, well-designed and cleverly designed. And what makes millions of Asians mobile on streets that often aren’t, can’t be so bad.

Take care of Japan and Europe.
