The pretty SP-1 from Honda’s racing company HRC was able to clinch a Superbike World Championship title with Colin Edwards on its debut, but in the sales room the V2 machine lost the duel against the in-house CBR competition by a large margin.

A series tuning that was too soft and a full 20 kilos overweight compared to the Fireblade caused the actually highly interesting super sports car to flop, albeit good ride comfort and the cultivated, very entertaining two-cylinder engine bring high country road qualities to the motorcycle.

Since some owners were only too happy to let the instincts of this athlete run free, caution is also advised with externally well-positioned SP models. If, for example, the plastic cladding still looks like new even after more than 30,000 kilometers, you should look suspiciously behind the scenes, i.e. the cladding. Naked truth: A vertically placed V-engine and two comparatively heavy silencers shift the center of gravity unfavorably backwards.

The supply is small, but the demand is also limited because the prices are comparatively high. However, specifically searching and well-informed fans are lurking for cheap bargains (around 30,000 kilometers, around 4,500 euros) and then access them within days. Interested parties, mainly country road pilots, do not shy away from high mileage (over 40,000 kilometers) with this super sports car, for example when good maintenance and high-quality retrofit parts encourage them to buy. Pieces in their original condition have the best value retention, as the rare SP models have future potential as youngtimers. For over 6000 euros, even the newer SP-2 are tough to get rid of. And machines that have been converted into pure runners have the most difficult position, because the relatively “slow” SP is almost completely out of the hobby racers’ case.
