Intelligent Cranium Helmets (ICH) started developing its smart helmet in 2015. The development team identified the big blind spot in their field of vision as the biggest problem for motorcyclists. The visor area provides approximately a 120-degree field of view. The remaining 240 degrees can only partially be seen by the biker when he turns his head.

Optical and acoustic warning

ICH relies on cameras mounted on the helmet to enlarge the field of view. Two are facing backwards, one is facing forward. In addition, ultrasonic distance sensors are installed on the back of the helmet. ICH uses a head-up display to bring relevant information or hazard warnings into the driver’s field of vision.

If an object now appears in the blind spot, the driver receives an optical signal in the display. If the object moves too close to the biker’s skin, an acoustic signal (which can be switched off) will also sound. In addition, an LED light in the back of the helmet lights up to warn the approaching driver. The front camera can record your own journey. The system is controlled by voice via the integrated microphone. Of course, speakers are also built in. Smartphones dock via Bluetooth.

Other features include a self-tinting visor, an automatic emergency call, and a GPS tracker for those who do not know where they put their helmet. ICH does not provide any information on the subject of energy supply and battery life.

Financing is not yet available

The helmet itself is based on a shell made of carbon and kevlar as well as a test according to the standards SNELL, DOT and ECE 22.05. It is available in sizes from 3XS to 2XL as well as in the colors matt black, red and white. Prices vary between $ 599 and $ 1,350, depending on the features.

But there is still one catch to the whole story. ICH is currently collecting through a Crowdfunding campaign money for the series production of the smart helmet. So whether the helmet will actually come is still in the stars.

As unnecessary as a goiter.

It is high time that major manufacturers took up the topic.

Conclusion

The topic “smart helmet” keeps popping up. However, only ever pushed by start-ups. The big helmet manufacturers have not yet jumped on this bandwagon. Most projects fail because of funding.
