Jonas Folger becomes IDM Superbike champion

Ex-MotoGP rider Jonas Folger crowns his comeback season with the title in the IDM Superbike 1000. The 27-year-old Yamaha rider also wins the two final races of the International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM) in Hockenheim.

The two-time champion and defending champion Ilya Mikhalchik in a BMW cannot defend his title. Folger ends the season 57 points ahead of the Ukrainian.

A moment to enjoy

“To be honest, I’m a little overwhelmed. I had to wait a long time for a championship title like this. That’s why I’m enjoying this incredibly beautiful moment even more now”, says Folger after winning the title, which he already secured with his victory in the first run. He confesses: “Before the championship started, however, I never thought that I would win all the races.” With the tailwind from the IDM, the Yamaha rider wants to get a driver’s seat in the World Championship for the coming season.

Strong Swiss cheers

The final weekend starts with a surprise. Changing weather conditions make for a new face in the best starting position: Dominik Schmitter takes advantage of the changeable conditions. The 26-year-old Swiss is faster with his Yamaha than the IDM dominator Folger. He cannot maintain the lead in the first race and is third. But with it he lays the foundation to move up to third place in the championship table. With second place in the final race behind Jonas Folger, he makes a strong statement.

With constancy to the IDM Supersport 600 title: Luca Grunwald

Luca Grunwald from Kawasaki crowns his constant season in the IDM Supersport 600. The 25-year-old doesn’t make any major blunders and scores points in every race. Even without a race win, the veteran becomes IDM champion. His direct pursuer Martin Vugrinec on a Yamaha had to accept his second retirement due to a fall at Hockenheim. The 21-year-old Croat missed the title by seven points. The two-time champion Max Enderlein on another Yamaha cannot cope with Hockenheim and cannot defend the title in third place.

Open decisions in two classes

In the IDM Superstock 600 for near-series motorcycles, which was held as a championship for the first time, Jan-Ole Jahnig prevailed on the Yamaha race. However, due to the lack of marking on the Pirelli standard tires, the result is only preliminary. If this result is confirmed, Paul Frode wins the championship title on a Honda. The result is still pending in the IDM Supersport 300. A protest was filed against championship leader Rick Dunnik’s Yamaha. According to the provisional result of the second race, Lennox Lehmann is the KTM champion. The 14-year-old from Dresden did not win a race. But last year’s ADAC Junior Cup winner improved from race to race. At Hockenheim he finished second behind his team-mate Lennox Lehmann in both races.
