An excellent field of drivers will lay the foundation for the championship final in Hockenheim this coming weekend (11-13 September). Due to COVID-19, spectators are not admitted to the Lausitzring due to the safety and hygiene regulations. However, all races are live stream at idm.de/live transfer.

Unknown route for Jonas Folger

Jonas Folger starts the second half of the shortened season of the International German Motor Championship (IDM) with a solid 33 point lead. At the two races at Lausitzring (September 11th to 13th) the Yamaha rider can now face his most demanding IDM task. In contrast to the TT Circuit Assen and the Sachsenring, the 27-year-old ex-MotoGP driver does not know the circuit. “For us it will definitely be a bigger challenge than the Sachsenring”, appreciates the Bavarian.

Hope for Mikhalchik

In contrast, defending champion Ilya Mikhalchik knows the course in Brandenburg from the previous two years. But the 24-year-old BMW driver does not have fond memories of the 2019 season opener. The Ukrainian won the first run, but retired in the second due to a technical defect. The two-time master is also baking smaller rolls this year. “I hope that I can fight for the podium again”, he says. Pretty humble for a rider who has dominated the past IDM Superbike season almost at will.

Dense superbike chasing group

The races at the Sachsenring left an impression on Ilya Mikhalchik. During the battles for position, he felt how close it was in the field of pursuers. Brand colleague Florian Alt, Dominik Schmitter as the second, fast Yamaha rider, his team mate Vladimir Leonov and Marc Moser, team mate of IDM leader Jonas Folger, made life difficult for him. Alessandro Polita, the fastest Honda driver, can also make it into the top 5.

Close championship

This can also be seen in the intermediate result of the championship: Florian Alt in third place follows Mikhalchik with eleven points and Dominik Schmitter is only nine points behind Alt within striking distance. Behind it, too, things are extremely close with Leonov, Moser, BMW privateer Pepijn Bijsterbosch, Polita and Kawasaki soloist Erwan Nigon. However, there will still be some postponements in the final standings of the IDM Superbike. Because in the desperate search for dates, the world motorcycle association FIM placed the final run for the endurance world championship in Estoril on the IDM final date in Hockenheim, of all places. The world champion Nigon will then be missing in the IDM as well as Bijsterbosch or Stefan Kerschbaumer. Florian Alt, whose French World Cup team is currently in seventh place, could also follow the commitment there. But that’s not official yet. Ilya Mikhalchik, on the other hand, will definitely start in the IDM. In the World Cup he will be represented by the Briton Peter Hickman.

Gripping championship decision

While Ilya Mikhalchik can actually tick off his third title in a row, IDM Supersport champion Max Enderlein is on schedule with Yamaha. On his home track, the Sachsenring, he won both races after thrilling duels with Martin Vugrinec. With that he overtook the Dutchman Sander Kroeze. The 18-year-old youngster did not get along so well with his Yamaha at the Sachsenring. He is now starting the second half of the season eleven points behind. In the Supersport 300 junior class, too, things are very close. Harry Khouri on Kawasaki is only six points ahead of Melvin van der Voort on Yamaha. Behind them follows, as in the premier class IDM Superbike, a very close field of chasers with the runner-up Rick Dunnik, the closed formation of RT Motorsports by SKM-Kawasaki with the Belgian Luca de Vleeschauwer, the best German Marvin Siebdrath and the Dutch Colin Velthuizen. Lennox Lehmann follows the strong Kawasaki trio as the fastest KTM rider in the slipstream.
