The IDM season got off to a successful start in Assen. The first long-awaited IDM Superbike duel between Jonas Folger and the two-time champion Ilya Mikhalchik was won by the ex-MotoGP rider on a Yamaha.

With a lead of 2.8 seconds, Folger prevailed against the Ukrainian BMW driver. “It wasn’t child’s play”, reports Folger after his first IDM start. In the second run, Folger repeated his success. He lays the foundation for his success with a rocket launch.

Folger wins both runs

Jonas Folger makes it exciting: In the first run, the pole setter briefly loses the lead against Ilya Mikhalchik after the start. But the defending champion made a mistake in the first round and Folger was able to regain the lead. He extends his lead to over two seconds. “I then tried to keep the lead”, describes the 27-year-old Yamaha rider. The second race, started in reverse order, also wins Folger. However, he is lucky: After crossing the finish line, the gear lever falls off.

But Folger is full of praise for the runner-up Ilya Mikhalchik: “That was work. He is a strong driver.” Mikhalchik is as happy about the two second places as he is about victories. “It is very important for me to be able to develop myself against such a strong opponent.” In both races, IDM returnees Florian Alt finished third in a BMW. The driver of Benny Wilbers’ team was barely able to test before the first outing in Assen. “Now we have to further reduce the gap to the top”, outputs Alt as the next target.
