Jet helmets put to the test: motorcycle helmets with the feeling of freedom
Motorcycle open face helmets in the test
The feeling of freedom on the motorcycle – despite the loss of safety
Far from extinct: open face helmets. It is true that full-face and flip-up helmets are increasingly displacing open old-school helmets for good safety reasons. But not only nostalgic people appreciate “jets” as (compulsory) headgear, because they simply offer a nice feeling of freedom.

Everyday motorcyclists are now in the minority in Germany. Nowadays, the motorcycle is seen more as a nice hobby. “That is why, for many, the helmet no longer just has to be practical, it should also look good first and foremost. You probably want a little more lifestyle, ”explains Andre Walek (39), Germany boss of the Italian helmet manufacturer Nolan, about the unexpected sales success of the N 20 model Quarter times as often as the full-face helmet bestseller N 85. -Scooter riders are certainly still the main clientele for open face helmets, but industry expert Walek estimates the proportion of motorcyclists among the buyers of his open face helmets at around half.
Above all, chopper and cruiser drivers, retro bike pilots and, increasingly, drivers of sporty naked bikes use “jets”. And that although open helmets have only occupied a small niche in driver equipment for years, because full-face helmets offer better safety and better weather protection and flip-up helmets are becoming increasingly popular.

This success is also unexpected because the model has its price and there are many extremely cheap offers in the highly competitive market. In this country there is no obligation to wear a helmet – and everything that meets certain requirements, such as a restraint system, can be offered as a motorcycle helmet. In addition to so-called braincap half-shells, there are also many jet helmets imported from the Far East that have not been tested according to the ECE-2205 standard. Such “marbles” are sometimes dangerous (low shock absorption, poor anti-slip protection, adventurous closures), but they go through at a police check. However, there can be a lot of stress with the insurance company in the event of an accident resulting in injury. Definitely stay away from it! Not only Walek, but also other reputable helmet sellers, therefore, with a clear conscience, only offer helmets that have been homologated by an accredited testing institute (recognizable by the test number that must begin with “05”). Only those open face helmets that had passed this important safety test were allowed to take part in the MOTORRAD practical test. Nevertheless, they are inexpensive. And look good.

Germot GM 100.
providers: Germot, phone 0 61 03/45 91 00, www.germot.de; price: 49.90 euros; Sizes: XS to XXL; To dye: Matte black, silver, black
plus
High stability even on brisk country roads; Glasses can be neatly integrated; encloses the head evenly and satisfactorily; Removable parasol
minus
Quite weighty (around 1100 grams) and feels comparatively heavy when driving, unfavorably balanced; Processing below average; Chin strap click fastener extremely hooked and not very easy to use, chin strap presses uncomfortably against the larynx; Lining with a synthetic feel, slightly sweaty and scratchy even at outside temperatures of 20 degrees; loud eddies
Conclusion
The poorly positioned and sparsely padded chin strap pinches, the outdated click fastener costs a lot of nerves when putting on and taking off, and because the fit is not everyone’s cup of tea, pressure points can arise in the long term. Not a touring helmet, but the GM 100 is perfectly fine for city use.
MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

Grex DJ1 Peak.
providers: Nolangroup Germany, phone 07159/93160, www.nolangroup.de; price: 89.95 euros; Sizes: XS to XXL; To dye: Matte black, matte silver, black, white
plus
Pleasantly light (just over 800 grams); Chin strap sits in the right place and is comfortably padded
minus
Does not sit, but rather lies on the head, helmet slips easily, fit with clearly noticeable defects; scratchy lining, not very easy to wear, hooked closure; Overall very open shape, drafty, even in city traffic the wind swirls to loud noises, very loud at country road speeds, overall miserable acoustics and very mediocre aerodynamics (wobbling and swinging from 80 km / h)
Conclusion
Looks interesting. And has the ECE test mark. More positive things can hardly be said about the Italian, because the comparatively expensive Grex is a clear loser in the sub-100 euro class. Poor fit, poor wearing comfort on country tours, just acceptable in the city – poor.
MOTORRAD judgment: sufficient

Hero Classic-66.
providers: Held, phone 08321/66460, www.held.de; price: from 59.95 euros; Sizes: XS to XL; To dye: Matt black, matt black with decor, matt white with decor
plus
Good ventilation by means of a channel system in the EPS helmet inner shell, removable parasol well and effectively positioned; very comfortable lining in suede look; The ratchet lock can be adjusted very well; good suitability for glasses; nice and light (around 830 grams)
minus
Loud, booming, disturbing wind noises at faster country road speeds; The helmet sits too loosely, lifts slightly from the head from 80 km / h due to moderate aerodynamics and therefore has to be fixed extremely tightly with the chin strap, resulting in an uncomfortable feeling of pressure
Conclusion
The appearance is very pleasing, as is the price. Even with the first try-on, the Classic-66 scores with easy handling and pleasant wearing comfort. When driving, however, it loses its good mark, because a wobbly seat, loud airstream noises and very mediocre aerodynamics interfere on tour.
MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

IXS HX 87 Cafe Rider.
providers: IXS, phone 07631/18040, www.ixs.de; price: 89.95 euros; Sizes: XS to XL; To dye: Matte black, matte black with matte white
plus
Fits well, encloses the head perfectly, chin strap is comfortably positioned, can be pulled tight, ratchet fastener is very comfortable; is stable in the airstream, even at brisk country road speeds, insulates airstream noise well; skin-friendly lining, integrated sun visor; good fit for people who wear glasses, no pressure points
minus
Parasol (removable) in the field of vision when cornering; Ventilation slides run a bit tight; comparatively high weight (almost 1200 grams); Chin strap too long, the end of the strap flutters while driving
Conclusion
A good, almost very good open face helmet. A great offer for less than 100 euros, because the Cafe Rider not only looks great with its retro design, it is also in a class of its own in this price range. No other low-cost helmet in the test field combines wearing comfort, acoustics and aerodynamics in such a balanced way.

MTR jet fiber.
providers: Louis, phone 040/73419360, www.louis.de; price: from 39.95 euros; Sizes: XS to XXL; To dye: Matte black, matte black with orange, black
plus
Chin strap sits well and tight, ratchet lock closes properly; removable parasol, snap fasteners with stable hold; Easy to put on and take off; Helmet shell extends over the ears, snug fit, overall good fit; only weighs around 900 grams
minus
The sunshade restricts the field of vision in tight curves, making optimal visual guidance hardly possible; Moderate suitability for glasses, pushes and shifts glasses temples; minimal but noticeable wobbling at country road speeds
Conclusion
At this competitive price, it’s easy to add the Jet Fiber to your shopping cart. The good thing is: you will hardly regret it. In the city completely flawless and with good handling, on the country road due to minor weaknesses in aerodynamics and acoustics not a blast, but absolutely okay.
MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

AGV Bali Copter.
providers: agv, phone 089/353964660, www.agv.com; Price: from 99 euros; Sizes: XS to XL; Colors: matt black, black, white and seven designs (pictured: Chopper Black / Gunmetal)
plus
Firm fit, but by no means uncomfortable; comfortable, well-padded chin strap, ratchet fastener with simple operation and easy to adjust; Lining with leather feel is very easy to wear; suitable for glasses; Removable collar tabs
minus
Visor is very close to nose, spoiler edge disturbing in the field of vision, turbulence and drafts even when driving through town and at moderate country road speeds; Overall acoustics rather moderate, booming at 100 km / h when visor is open; Weight noticeable (over 1050 grams)
Conclusion
Actually a typical scooter helmet, but thanks to its versatile decor, the Bali Copter also goes well with motorcycles, from the sporty naked to the cruiser. The quality is decent, the wearing comfort is really good, but noises from the wind and drafts are annoying when riding on country roads.
MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

A-style jet.
providers: Niemann + Frey, phone 02151/55540, www.go-astyle.de; price: from 179 euros; Sizes: XS to XL; To dye: a total of nine designs in 23 color combinations (pictured: Damier white / black)
plus
Visor without ratchet, but easy to operate and adjust; detachable collar flap; Well positioned chinstrap with a very user-friendly ratchet fastener
minus
Quite heavy (over 1100 grams); only partially suitable for glasses, in the long run the temples press behind the ears; punctual pressure points on forehead, overall fit not very inspiring; from around 70 km / h drafts and turbulence due to the visor that tends to be too short; Lining feels sweaty and synthetic
Conclusion
The Italian would be right at the forefront of the beauty contest – the variety of tasteful designs is first class, and retro pilots in particular are extremely enthusiastic. In the tough practical test, however, the “Styler” offers a little too little for the money, because the wearing comfort in particular leaves a lot to be desired.

Caberg Breeze.
providers: Germot, phone 06103/459100, www.germot.de; price: 129.90 euros; Sizes: XS to XL; To dye: Matte Black, Matte Pink, Matte Silver, White
plus
Absolutely exemplary ventilation, ideal for high summer excursions; slightly tinted visor as a gentle glare protection with clean adjustment mechanism; detachable collar flap; suitable for glasses; comfortable ratchet fastener; neutral aerodynamics; Weight okay (less than 1050 grams)
minus
Chin strap improperly attached, too close to the larynx; punctual pressure points especially in the temple area, overall fit rather mediocre; comparatively high noise development; Drafts even within built-up areas despite the visor closed
Conclusion
One of the summer hits comes from Italy, in southern climes they apparently know how a helmet should be ventilated. The spaci-ge, modern jet helmet is well equipped and solidly processed. However, aerodynamic weaknesses on tour and only mediocre wearing comfort prevent a better grade.
MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

Hero Mc Corry.
providers: Held, phone 08321/66460, www.held.de; price: 79.95 euros; Sizes: XS to XL; To dye: Matte black with white, black with white, white with black
plus
Exemplarily encloses the head with good coverage of the forehead area; sits comfortably, very comfortable to wear, well balanced; for visor jet helmet low weight (around 950 grams); easy-to-use ratchet lock; very comfortable lining; suitable for people who wear glasses
minus
Strong reflections on the visor when light falls from behind; Visor grid a little too coarse; slightly annoying turbulence noises from 70 km / h; When the visor is closed, the spoiler is in the driver’s field of vision, from 100 km / h fine airflow towards the eyes
Conclusion
Wonderfully balanced, comfortable jet helmet, which impresses with good aerodynamics, especially on overland tours. In localities, however, it is “open” enough to hear a lot about the traffic around you. The few negatives of the Mc Corry are forgivable at this price.
MOTORRAD verdict: good

Highway.1 Kansas.
providers: Louis, phone 040/73419360, www.louis.de; price: from 69.95 euros; Sizes: XXS to XL; To dye: Anthracite with decoration, black, black with decoration, white with decoration
plus
Visor offers the best weather protection within the test field, keeps airflow out efficiently and without turbulence, even at brisk country road speeds; also available in very small sizes
minus
Scratchy, sweaty lining; fiddly click fastener; appears heavier than it is (around 1100 grams); Wearing comfort noticeably restricted by pressure points, turns out to be extremely small for the respective size, pressure points on the ear, critical for people who wear glasses; Whistling noises from 60 km / h; aerodynamically reacts somewhat sluggishly when looking over the shoulder
Conclusion
You really can’t complain about the price. On the other hand, it is over-the-top fit and comfort as well as the uncomfortable handling. The good weather protection provided by the large visor is a real blessing for commuters who are also on the move in bad weather.
MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

Nolan N 20.
providers: Nolangroup Germany, phone 07159/93160, www.nolangroup-.de; price: from 154.95 euros; Sizes: XXS to XXL; To dye: Black, silver, white and five different designs (pictured: Caribe)
plus
Lies balanced and harmonious in the airstream, feels lighter than the actual weight (approx. 1050 grams); Ratchet lock with easy operation; Hardly any disturbing noises on country roads; suitable for glasses
minus
Almost too noise-insulated in city traffic; Chin strap not sufficiently padded and poorly positioned with noticeable pressure on the larynx; Visor with annoying reflections depending on the incidence of light; Grid of visor very coarse
Conclusion
Very neatly made open face helmet with pleasantly neutral aerodynamics on tour. The exemplary range of sizes and a large selection of colors and designs make it easy to choose the solid N 20. In city traffic, the Italian seems a bit too closed.

NZI Flow.
providers: Polo, phone 02165/8440200, www.polo-motorrad.de; price: 119.95 euros; Sizes: XS to XL; To dye: Pink, matte black
plus
Softly padded chinstrap easy to adjust, easy-to-use ratchet fastener, easy to open and close; suitable for glasses; pleasant suede feel of the lining; extremely good ventilation in summer temperatures through efficient air inlets; overall good fit; neutral aerodynamics
minus
Noticeable noise development even at city speed, strong whistling noises on the country road; Drafts in spite of the closed visor, primarily just pure stone chip or insect protection; Weight relatively high (about 1100 grams); slight bruises on ears
Conclusion
When it comes to touring in the summer, the well-ventilated Spaniard shows his strengths. Unfortunately, interfering noises are annoying even at low speeds, and the Flow is not lightweight either. Because of its acceptable aerodynamics and handling, it is still a good and inexpensive helmet.
MOTORRAD verdict: good
Final scoring
archive
The final score.
Amazing: Price hammer like that hero Mc Corry or the very decent MTR score brightly up front, while the A-Style in the visor jets and the Grex in the classic jet helmets – both rather expensive in direct comparison – only occupy rear seats. Can mean that in the low-cost league, sales, marketing and advertising influence the sales price more than the product quality itself. But it doesn’t matter, because none of the helmets tested is really bad or dangerous. Almost all of them are therefore recommended at least as a practical second helmet.
