The KTM 125 Duke, presented in 2010, became a bestseller among the youngest motorcycle beginners, 16-year-old A1 driving license novices. Looked sharp, drove wonderfully jagged. In Austrian: it fits! Now, however, young people tick differently than young adults with an A2 driving license, who are allowed to drive with an impressive 48 hp. So it was not set in 2013 that the new KTM 390 Duke would also be a hit.

Yes, it was even a risk to put a strong, but with a maximum of 44 hp, single-cylinder engine, far removed from superlatives, in the already familiar 125cc frame. After all, KTM-inclined beginners could have resorted to a 690 Duke throttled to 48 hp, which can be freed to a fat 70 hp after the driver’s license upgrade. But Mattighofen thinks globally and not just about new drivers. In Asia in particular, there is a high demand for small-volume motorcycles. The mini dukes are produced inexpensively in India. The processing sometimes leaves a lot to be desired, owners often report small annoyances such as faulty speedometers or problems with the electrical system.

Robert Bauer (32), master two-wheeler mechanic at KTM Stuttgart (www.ktm-stuttgart.com) answered our questions.
MOTORCYCLE: Who are typical interested parties in the KTM 390 Duke?
Robert Bauer: There are a lot of them, but not just young drivers. The motorcycle is particularly popular with older returnees who have already taken a break for a long time and are therefore a little unsafe with machines that are too heavy. And in the female motorcycle world. But then there are also many who are looking for a city runabout – especially here in the metropolis of Stuttgart. The KTM 390 Duke is small, agile and ideal for bustling through when traffic comes to a standstill. I think the popularity is similar in other metropolitan areas as well.
MOTORCYCLE: So a typical short-haul vehicle.
Robert Bauer: No. We had a customer who just drove to Lake Garda in the KTM 390 Duke. When it comes to original accessories, the comfort seat is in great demand and we have retrofitted GPS mounts. Well, there are obviously enough people who take tours with it. One of our customer machines already has over 30,000 kilometers under its belt. You can hardly achieve this in such a short time with just short trips.
MOTORCYCLE: What other accessories are popular??
Robert Bauer: Almost all machines are equipped with hand guards and crash pads.
MOTORCYCLE: Aha, noticeable …
Robert Bauer: Well, as I said, there are a lot of insecure beginners and returnees. And the young, a little wilder, already know why crash pads make sense for them. [laughs]
MOTORCYCLE: Otherwise frequent problems?
Robert Bauer: Hardly. The speedometer and the indicators are unfortunately not always well sealed against water. The indicator glasses will then be fogged up and the speedometer will malfunction or fail completely. That would be a typical weak point. In view of the relatively large number of KTM 390 Duke sold, these are rather isolated cases.
MOTORCYCLE: What is the general quality of the KTM 390 Duke produced in India??
Robert Bauer: As a mechanic, if you look closely at certain details, you can tell that KTMs from Austria are a little more accurate. But the “Indian quality” is also impressive, especially since everything usually works well and without any problems. In the beginning there were a few teething troubles with the 125 from India. But KTM learned quickly from this, and with the 390, which was only brought onto the market later, these mistakes have long been eliminated. Overall, the small KTM 390 Duke is a solid motorcycle.

2013:Market launch of the KTM 390 Duke made in India. The single-cylinder four-stroke engine with 44 hp is in the steel space frame from the KTM 125 Duke, which has been available since 2010. Total weight with a full tank: 152 kg. A newly designed aluminum swingarm and tighter spring elements from WP Suspension also distinguish the 390 from the 125. Due to the low power-to-weight ratio with open power, level driving license holders are only allowed to drive with a maximum of 41 hp. Another power variant: 33 hp. Registration numbers in Germany: 384 units. Color: white with black and orange. Price: 4955 euros.
2014:New color: black (with orange), white also remains on offer. Registration numbers in Germany: 1482 pieces. Price: 4995 euros.
2015:New driving license A2 variant with 41 hp. New: slipper clutch. Registration numbers in Germany: 1394 pieces.

An alternative to the KTM 390 Duke is the Kawasaki Z 300.
Kawasaki Z 300: Younger than the KTM 390 Duke (since 2015), but looks more mature and grown-up. Used Kawasaki Z 300 can be found from 3700 euros.
Yamaha MT-03: Not to be confused with the new two-cylinder MT-03. The one-pot Yamaha (2005 to 2013) is cheap and good. Available from 2200 euros.
Honda CB 500 X: On the market since 2013. Ultra-solid, fully suitable for beginners and touring. Good for riders with long legs. Great deal! From 3000 euros.
Derbi Mulhacen 659: Driving away from the mainstream: The Spaniard (2007 to 2011) with a Yamaha single-cylinder engine is considered reliable. From 2500 euros.
