A huge advantage of the machine is its fully adjustable chassis. The spring base, for example, can be easily raised or lowered without tools.

The V2 of the KTM 990 Adventure rattles and craves speed. On long stretches of the motorway, the hard, narrow seat of the Bobbes hurts, and at top speed with suitcases, the load tends to commute. Everyday maneuvering is a nightmare for people under 1.75 meters with the 990. Head teacher BMW-GS owners explain with a raised index finger: “Mine offers more comfort and better protection.”

The driver of the KTM 990 Adventure meanwhile, stay calm and wait until the asphalt turns into gravel or soil. Then it says: “atsch, eat my dirt!” Because no other travel enduro runs faster off-road. Anyone who dares (and has mounted rough profiles) whips over the piste with over 180 things, of course standing, the sports bench clamped between their thighs – Dakar sends its regards.

KTM 990 Adventure: hot tip for traveling Hardendurists

After all, the predecessor model, the 950, was actually developed and endurance tested at the legendary rally, and so it hit the stores almost one-to-one as a series machine. From 2006 to 2012 the KTM 990 Adventure continues the consistent off-road course. Overall, it is the better machine with a more sophisticated, more powerful and more reliable engine.

With the standard version, more moderate pilots will be happy about ABS – which makes sense on European country roads. With the uncompromising “S” and “R” you can also do without, because with spring travel suitable for competition you can also go through desert sand. Brakes? Better not there! Note: The KTM 990 Adventure is certainly not an all-rounder, but it is probably the hottest tip for traveling Hardendurists.

With the stately seat height, short-legged people need a little courage to make friends with the long-legged large Enduro 990 Adventure.

2006 The KTM 990 Adventure model with an injection engine taken from the 120 hp 990 Superduke and throttled to 98 hp replaces the 950 series. Newly designed fairing, ABS standard on the standard model. Adventure S has more suspension travel (245 mm), but without ABS. Price: 12,598 euros each.

2009 New cockpit, modified cylinder head, now 106 hp. The KTM 990 Adventure R model (200 euros surcharge) replaces the S model with 115 hp and 265 mm of travel. Price: 13,295 euros.

2011 Dakar variant based on a standard model with ABS, 115 PS, special paint, orange frame, rally seat and protective bars. Price: 13,695 euros.

2012 Adventure / R (both 115 HP) for the last time in Germany. Prices: 13,795 / 13,995 euros.

Market situation

MOTORCYCLE

Availability on the market: low.

The two off-road sports-oriented S and R models are rarely found on offer. Relatively few buyers were probably much more important than ABS, and quite a few of them still drive their off-road mules over hill and dale and, as the first owner, have no intention of selling. If such an off-road fan finally sells his machine privately, it is hardly less than 4500 euros. The high mileage is also noticeable with standard models; there are hardly any machines available for less than 20,000 kilometers. Apparently the KTM 990 Adventure is ridden and rarely stands idle – a good sign.

But even in spite of the high mileage, bargains are rare: well-maintained, but well-traveled first years of manufacture with ABS should often cost more than 5000 euros even with more than 50,000 kilometers on the watch. From 6000 euros, however, there are some decent used ones. From first hand, with a good 30,000 kilometers, suitcases and other useful additional equipment. Such recommended offers are also offered by dealers. The pain threshold – even for jewelry from the last year of construction – is just over 9,000 euros.

Suitcases are considered a bonus. Pay particular attention to traces of off-road use such as loose spokes or leaky spring elements.

The first question that arises is about off-road use, especially with the S and R models. While other large enduros are almost exclusively driven on asphalt in a rather harmless way, owners of the KTM 990 Adventure often use their pedestal for trips in areas without paved roads or even for hobby rallies. This puts a lot more strain on the material, and if you have had an off-road experience, you should carefully look for signs of a fall, loose spokes, leaky spring elements and dented radiators.

If you want to go on an off-road adventure with the machine later, you can live with a few scratches if the price is correspondingly low and the maintenance condition is understandably good. Parts such as protective bars and plates, windows or stable GPS mounts from KTM original accessories and from retrofit suppliers Touratech add a slight increase in value. Suitcases are generally seen as a bonus.
