In the first two model years, owners of the KTM 990 Super Duke often complained of defective starter freewheels and, in some cases, electronic problems due to defective cables. However, these problems should have been eliminated as part of model maintenance measures, and KTM dealers were usually briefed. This makes it all the more important to have a complete maintenance history documented. Also a known problem: cooling water mixed with engine oil.

A look into the cooler or expansion tank is recommended. If a strange mud floats there, only an oil change, flushing the cooling circuit and installing a modified shaft seal plus a reinforced shaft for the water pump will help. In general, however, the one-liter engine of the KTM 990 Super Duke is considered to be robust and reliable. What one cannot exactly say about the clutch slave cylinder – the piston tends to tilt after a while, hydraulic oil then escapes, and coupling becomes impossible. You won’t find this motorcycle on every corner. And if you are looking for it, you sometimes have to accept longer journeys. The general demand is rather subdued, but there is a group of fans for this machine. So if there is a good and cheap offer in the advertisements, you should hurry up. The majority are private providers, around 60 percent, who, however, often want to sell their KTM 990 Super Duke with naive price expectations.

Example: a four-year-old model with a replacement silencer, over 10,000 kilometers, a proud 9,000 euros. For this money, almost virgin copies of the KTM 990 Super Duke can be found at dealers with a warranty. Few Super Duke contenders want to pay more than 7,500 euros anyway – and if so, then for noble conversions with expensive parts and R models. There are also some former imports from abroad (e.g. Italy) on offer, it is best to have the chassis number checked by KTM and check the vehicle history before buying.

2007 New guy. Adaptation to Euro 3 standard, therefore revised injection system, reduced consumption, larger tank volume (18.5 instead of 15 liters). Slightly flatter steering head angle, new front mask for better wind protection, weight: 203 kg. Market launch of the KTM 990 Super Duke R. Differences to the standard model: single seat bench, longer suspension strut (the rear is therefore steeper) with less spring travel (150 instead of 160 mm), milled triple clamps, steering damper, carbon trim parts, frame in orange instead of black. Weight: 199 kg.
Prices: 12,495 euros (R model: 13,698 euros).

2008 R model now with 132 HP engine (larger intake valves made of titanium, lighter crankshaft).
Price: 13,795 euros.

2013 Last model year. Since 2012 only the “R” as a two-seater with 125 hp in the range.
