4.7 percent growth in the 1st quarter

With 203,853 bikes brought onto the market for the first time, new motorcycle registrations in Europe increased by 4.7% in the first quarter of 2018 compared to the previous year. This is reported by the European motorcycle manufacturer association ACEM.

With 46,126 new registrations (+ 1.4%) the market in Italy remains the strongest in Europe. France follows in second place with 36,979 newly registered motorcycles (+ 9.1%). Third place went to Germany with 36,085 new registrations and an increase of 1.9%. Spain (29,063 new registrations, + 16.7%) and Great Britain (23,485 new registrations, + 7.4%) follow in the next ranks.

E-bikes are growing significantly

For motorized two-wheelers under 125 cm³, the ACEM reports 37,071 new registrations for the first quarter of 2018, which corresponds to a decrease of 40.2% compared to the previous year. All major markets have lost in the process. France stayed ahead with 10,102 units, but lost 41.5%. Second place went to the Netherlands with 8,856 units and a decrease of 35.3%. This is followed by Italy (3,867 units, -19.4%), Belgium (3,458 units, -14.8%) and Spain (3,107 units, -21.4%).

Electric bikes are showing significant growth in Europe.

If you look at the new registrations of electrically powered two-wheelers across all categories, the ACEM recorded 8,281 new registrations in the first three months of the year, which corresponds to an increase of 51.2% compared to the same period of the previous year. The largest e-bike market is France with 2,150 new registrations, ahead of the Netherlands with 1,703 new registrations, as well as Belgium (1,472 new registrations), Spain (1,258 new registrations) and Italy (582 new registrations).

If we only take the purely electrically powered motorcycles, the European market grew by 118.5% to 1,726 e-bikes in the first quarter. Here, too, France is ahead again (732 bikes, + 228%). followed by Spain (311 bikes, + 161%), the Netherlands (202 bikes, + 304%) and Germany (173 bikes, – 10.4%)
