New motorcycle registrations in Europe in September
Two-wheeler market continues to recover

The European two-wheeler market is still lagging a little behind the new registrations from 2019 after nine months, but it is still catching up.

In the period from January to September 2020, the four largest EU motorcycle markets plus the British market had a total of 708,503 new registrations, with ACEM also including light motorcycles. France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Great Britain make up around 80 percent of the European motorcycle market.

Germany in the new registrations plus

Germany is the only one of these five countries to be positive. From January to September of this year, 183,514 motorcycles were newly registered in the Federal Republic of Germany. In the same period of the previous year there were 151,265 units. From January to September there were 183,701 motorcycles in Italy (previous year: 198,395), France 155,159 motorcycles (previous year: 162,032), Spain 109,305 units (previous year: 136,548) and the United Kingdom (UK) according to ACEM to 76,824 (previous year: 84,586) . If this continues, Germany would even have a chance this year of overtaking Italy as the strongest two-wheeler market.

ACEM

Due to the lockdown in March and April, the start of the motorcycle market was postponed. The strong months of 2020 are June and July.

The registration volume is still 3.3 percent down on the same period last year. Nevertheless, the current figures are encouraging, because in the first six months of this year the most important European markets struggled with a total decline of 17 percent. The corona lockdown at times completely paralyzed the motorcycle market – even at the time of the classic season start in March and April.

Moped market in the plus

The European moped market, on the other hand, is up. The registrations of motorized two-wheelers with a displacement of up to 50 cm³ and a maximum speed of 45 km / h are 6.4 percent above the comparable period of the previous year. The largest European markets for this segment include Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain. The largest markets come from January to September 2020 for a total of 205,688 units.

ACEM

Because many would like to expand their individual transport options, the two- and three-wheelers with up to 50 cm³ and a top speed of 45 km / h are well above the previous year.

Antonio Perlot, Secretary General of ACEM, comments on the current situation of the EU motorcycle market as follows: “The registration figures for the first nine months of the year show that the sector is slowly starting to recover from the very difficult months of March and April 2020 (…).” However, the situation remains delicate and the uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 outbreak is not over yet, said the ACEM Secretary General. Nevertheless, he sees reason for a little optimism, mainly because “the recent decision of the EU institutions that Extend the deadline for the sale of Euro 4 models to December 31, 2021, will certainly help the motorcycle industry to better cope with this crisis.”

Crisis can promote two-wheeler market

He also sees opportunities for the two-wheeler market in the crisis: “The COVID-19 crisis also offers policymakers an opportunity to reflect on local transport policies. The crisis has clearly shown that excessive reliance on public transport can lead to weaknesses in urban transport systems. A better approach would be to find a balance between different modes of transport. Better integration of two-wheelers into the transport mix can, for example, reduce the current risk of public transport networks operating at full capacity.”
