New motorcycle registrations January 2021

The two-wheeler market in January 2021 is 55.7 percent, well below the same period of the previous year; if you isolate the motorcycles in the statistics, there are still 49.9 percent. There are good reasons for it.

In this article:

  • Motorcycles in January 2021
  • Light motorcycles in January 2021
  • Light scooter in January 2021
  • New scooter registrations in January 2021
  • Conclusion

The entire two-wheeler market in January 2021 is around 56 percent behind the same month last year. Motorcycles recorded a minus of 49.9 percent, light motorcycles minus 67.5 percent, scooters minus 72.1 percent and light scooters minus 74.5 percent. In the same month of the previous year, however, i.e. in January 2020, all divisions recorded a sharp increase compared to January 2019. One of the reasons for this: It felt like the season in winter 2019/2020 never came to an end, as there was no really wintry weather up to and including January.

Another reason for the record numbers in the same month last year could also be that Entry into force of the new driving license regulation that allows motorists under certain conditions to control a 125cc scooter or a 125cc motorcycle. Almost 80,000 drivers took advantage of this opportunity to extend their driving license last year. As soon as spring becomes more open-hearted, we expect the number of registrations to continue to rise in the 125cc area as well.

Motorcycles in January 2021

In January 2021, a total of 2,205 motorcycles were newly registered, with the BMW R 1250 GS entering with a considerable lead: with its 366 units, it is 278 points ahead of the second-placed BMW R 18 (88 new registrations). If the 12 percent new commercial registrations of the large GS were excluded, the ratio would not change.

Light motorcycles in January 2021

295 newly registered 125cc bikes are led by the Yamaha MT-125, which is followed by its sporty sister, the Yamaha YZF-R125, in second place. The Brixton 125cc take bronze but have to share third place with 125cc Fantics and the KTM 125 Duke.

Light scooter in January 2021

The 125cc scooters only had 177 new registrations for January 2021. But let’s be honest: Neither the weather nor the pandemic circumstances encouraged people to buy two-wheelers in January. The Honda SH 125 sold best, with 50 new registrations alone. Close behind, with 45 units, the Vespa is already rolling in, while it is followed in third and fourth by the Liberty 125 and the Medley 125 – both also from Piaggio.

New scooter registrations in January 2021

With 174 units, the large scooters bring up the rear of the two-wheeler registrations in January 2021. At the top of the ranking is the 300 Vespa, followed by the three-wheel Peugeot Metropolis and the three-wheel Piaggio MP3. The latter has to share third place with the Honda X-ADV.

Conclusion

The reason for the sharp decline in the two-wheeler market in January 2021 is not particularly weak January figures, but particularly strong figures from the previous year. In January 2020, there was not much of the winter, at the same time the new driving license regulation for driving 125cc bikes took effect and on top of that, the Covid pandemic led to an increased need for individual traffic.
