Two-wheeler market in the red

Around 23,000 two-wheelers were registered in May 2021. Compared to the same month last year, that’s a drop of a good six percent, but the comparison should be treated with caution.

It is not easy to compare May 2021 with the same month of the previous year, because the first lockdown in Germany ended at the beginning of May 2020. This means that many prospective buyers who wanted to buy a motorcycle in March or April only got hold of the train in May. This is why more two-wheelers were newly registered in May 2020 (24,855) than in May 2019 (20,197). Against this background, May 2021 is not in such a bad light when it comes to new registrations.

Overall market January to May 2021

Overall, with 88,747 new registrations, the two-wheeler market is 3 percent up on the previous year (86,154). If we use 2019 again for comparison for the period from January up to and including May, there is, however, a slight minus, because the year before last there were already 89,234 new two-wheeler registrations by May.

Individual segments in May 2021

New registrations for motorcycles fell by 6.3 percent in May, while the figure for light motorcycles was minus 4.6 percent. And the scooters are also in the red compared to the same month last year: scooters at minus 18.6 percent, light scooters at minus 4.5 percent.

Individual segments January to May 2021

The individual segments are quite different.

  • Motorcycles: For the period from January to May, the segment was 1.7 percent minus the previous year. A total of 55,586 motorcycles have been newly registered to date.
  • Light motorcycles: With 11,417 new registrations, light motorcycles are still up (12.3%).
  • Scooters: The big scooters are down 3.3 percent and have 6,814 new registrations.
  • Light motor scooters: The 125 cc scooters are up 15.6 percent (11,031 new registrations).

Conclusion

Comparing the current year 2021 with the lockdown previous year is not easy. The start of the motorcycle season was particularly affected. Compared to 2019, the overall market has so far been significantly in the red. The trend can currently be interpreted in such a way that the full year 2021 will end below 2020 and 2019 as well.
