Intruder, in German: “Intruder”. Not a positive name, rather provocative – and that fits. Because the Intruder family – from the small 125 to the mid-range around 750 cubic meters to the fat 1800s – penetrated: into the American-occupied cruiser segment. Particularly well-known: The Intruder 1400 from 1986, but also in the small displacement class with the 750. From it emerged in 2001 the Suzuki Intruder VL 800 LC Volusia and parallel to it the Marauder – translated “looters”. Behind the not exactly flattering names are motorcycles that flatter the soul with their simplicity and torque. Even more modern in the form of the Suzuki Intruder C 800 and M 800, which followed Volusia and Marauder in 2005.

No cruisers of the usual fat variety

The abbreviation C stands for Classic, M for Muscle Bike. By the way, both are mainly related to the appearance. Technically there are hardly any differences, both Suzuki Intruder 800 come with low-maintenance cardan shafts and rely on the tried and tested, water-cooled 45-degree Vau-Zwo from 1986 – but now with electronic injection and at least 805 cubic meters. This means that they are not cruisers of the usual fat variety – but you can always cruise with them.

Elongated fenders, running boards and wire spoke rims are hallmarks of the C 800 from 2005 to 2009.

Despite the rather contemplative 53 hp, the ribbed engine delights with a maximum torque of 69 Nm, which it shakes out of the combustion chamber up to model year 2008 at 4,000 rpm, later at 3,200 rpm – ideal for smooth cruising. On the other hand, the cruiser, which is quite light at 262 kilos and with the fat balloon tires, prefers to avoid winding curves and high speed. The Suzuki Intruder 800 with its rather poor single-disc brake is not made for this. The rear drum brake is no help either. So it’s better to always drive with foresight. Then you can enjoy the relaxed sitting posture and the elastic Vau-Zwo as befits your status.

Facelift

2004:Last model year of the Suzuki Intruder VL 800 LC Volusia with a 51 HP carburettor engine. Visually almost identical to the Suzuki Intruder C 800 available from 2005, but driver footrests instead of running boards. Price: 7,950 euros. Approvals in D: 760 pieces

2005:Market launch of the Suzuki Intruder C 800 and M 800. The C version looks similar to the Volusia, the M 800 to the former Marauder. Most important innovation: injection system, the output increases to 53 hp. Prices: 7,490 euros (M 800) / 7,950 euros (C 800). Approvals in D: 497 pieces

2006:The C 800 C underwent minor changes: different passenger footrests, reserve warning lamp with flashing function and ignition key with Intruder logo. Approvals in D: 380 pieces

2007:Revisions to the hand brake cylinder and lever, modification of switch units and the displays in the speedometer. Price: 8,190 euros. A special model with a screen, protective bar and sissy bar is also available for 8,655 euros. New colors: red and white. Approvals in D: 513 pieces

2009:Revision of the engine: new injection system and double ignition. The maximum torque of 69 Nm is now available earlier: at 3,200 rpm. Also changed: fenders and speedometer in a new design, LED rear light, license plate holder below instead of above the rear light. New version of the Intruder: C 800 C with cast rims instead of wire spoke rims and in two-tone paintwork: 8,390 euros. Approvals in D: 400 pieces

2014:Special model C 800 B: Black Edition completely in black for 9,640 euros. Approvals in D: 290 pieces

2016:Last model year of all Intruders as they do not receive an update to Euro 4. Approvals in D: 81 pieces

Market situation

Low price level from 4,000 euros:

Example ad: 28,000 km, EZ 06/2005, HU until 03/2019, 2nd hand, full service history; throttled to 48 hp, with new tires, accessory exhaust system, saddlebags, heated grips and windshield. VB 4,100 euros (private provider from Saxony).

There are no offers for less than 4,000 euros, above which there are initially models from the first years up to 2009, mostly with mileages between 20,000 and 50,000 kilometers. Not always, but often useful accessories such as saddlebags are part of the offer.

In the middle price range there are (sometimes too expensive) dealer offers from earlier model years as well as private offers for the revised Intruder from 2009 with new styling and dual ignition. The mileage is in the low five-digit range.

High price level from 6,500 euros:

Sample ad: C 800 C, 4,204 km, EZ 04/2014, new HU, 1st hand, full service history, with windshield, crash bar and saddlebags, one year guarantee, two years guarantee possible 6,990 euros (dealer offer from Saxony-Anhalt).

Anyone who is willing to spend 6,500 euros and more can choose between a second-generation C 800 or M 800 in almost new condition: mileage under 10,000 kilometers, plenty of accessories and at least twelve months dealer warranty.

Dealer interview with Olaf Brandt

Olaf Brandt (51) worked as a freelance dealer in Vechta (www.top-moto.de) there are currently around 150 used cars from seven brands. He’s always interested in good bikes. For him, this definitely includes the 800 Intruder.

MOTORCYCLE: A good three quarters of the used offers on the net come from dealers. Can you explain that?

Olaf Brandt: The Intruder is a good and solid motorcycle. Private owners rarely part with her. And we dealers also know how problem-free and stable in value the Intruder is, so we gladly accept it as part of payment and resell it with a guarantee with a clear conscience.

MOTORCYCLE: And then who will buy it?

Olaf Brandt: Pleasure riders who sometimes prefer 90 km / h to 100 km. They drive to the ice cream parlor or around the church tower. So no touring riders, but short distances of 50 to a maximum of 100 kilometers. Most of the time it is re-entryers who once gave up motorcycling for the house and children – now they just want to ride a little cruiser. Without spending an awful lot of money, they are looking for something sensible.

MOTORCYCLE: Keyword “sensible”: Are the 53 hp enough?

Olaf Brandt: Definitely for cruising, after all, there is enough torque available. You don’t heat with the Intruder, the engine doesn’t feel comfortable there. Overtaking works fine, but ultimately the single-disc front brake also reminds you to slow down and enjoy yourself.

MOTORCYCLE: Which intruder is best for this?

Olaf Brandt: All. There are optical differences between the C and M, but the more decisive factors are price and mileage. For some, even Volusia and Marauder are still interesting. Otherwise there are no major differences in popularity between models and years of manufacture.

MOTORCYCLE: What do people like to do on the bike??

Olaf Brandt: Often there is a sissy bar, and the exhaust is often exchanged, but that’s expensive. In addition, crash bars are often installed, and bags of course always play a role.

MOTORCYCLE: If someone trades in an Intruder with you, what does they switch to??

Olaf Brandt: In fact, that rarely happens. But when customers switch to a larger chopper or because they want to ride a Harley after all. But actually I rarely take them in payment … Unfortunately! (laughs)

MOTORCYCLE: Is there anything else you would like to say about the C 800 and M 800??

Olaf Brandt: Both are great bikes. Who has one: I would like to buy it! They are simply beautiful vehicles and very problem-free, loyal fellows.
