Results of the MOTORRAD readers’ poll 2019
Motorcycle of the year 2019
47,407 readers voted for the 21st time on the motorcycles of the year and selected the best of their genre in a total of ten categories – in 2019 for the first time the attractive and important class of entry-level bikes: 48 hp, easy-going, geared towards great freedom to discover on two wheels.

MOTORRAD readers were able to choose their favorite bikes in a total of ten categories. Which models will win in the tourer / sports tourer, athlete, enduro / supermoto, chopper / cruiser, naked bike, crossover, modern classics, entry-level, 125cc and scooter categories?
Tourer / sports tourer
Changing of the guard in the large class of tourers and sports tourers. With a clear peak, the KTM 1290 Super Duke GT, which has been renewed for this season, moves up to first place – but its predecessor also landed in a strong second place last year.
manufacturer
Victory in the Tourer / Sport Tourer category goes to the KTM 1290 Super Duke GT.
BMW’s strong sports tourer, the R 1250 RS, with a strengthened Shiftcam boxer, actually has to admit defeat, but in percentage terms it reaches almost the same value as in 2018. With a slight increase, the big RT of the Munich-based company ends the race, the gap remains ahead clear.
1st place: KTM 1290 Super Duke GT
Place 2: BMW R 1250 RS
Place 3: BMW R 1250 RT
athlete
The battle for prestige remains every year: Bologna or Bavaria? With the athletes, where every gram and every horsepower is haggled to be the first to cross the finish line!
manufacturer
The BMW S 1000 RR secured victory in the athlete category.
The new BMW S 1000 RR and the bewitchingly beautiful Ducati Panigale V4 R – homologation model for the Superbike World Championship – presented themselves to the public for the first time at the major autumn trade fairs. With a clear result: last year’s winner Ducati V4 S was beaten in third place, Bavaria’s double R was significantly ahead of the thoroughbred racer V4 R..
1st place: BMW S 1000 RR
Place 2: Ducati Panigale V4 R
Place 3: Ducati Panigale V4 S Corse
Enduros / supermotos
Clear movement in what is still the most attractive motorcycle class: Enduros and supermotos are in demand, the manufacturers have reacted accordingly and are presenting many interesting new releases and revisions for 2019.
manufacturer
The BMW R 1250 GS secured victory in the Enduros / Supermotos.
With clearly visible success also in the 2019 readers’ poll. The big GS is optically unchanged, but with the strongly made Shiftcam boxer again past last year’s winner, Honda’s Africa Twin. Hats off to third place: Guzzi’s retro enduro, which is also densely surrounded at trade fairs, climbs up to third place.
1st place: BMW R 1250 GS / Adventure
Place 2: Honda CRF 1000 L Africa Twin / Adventure Sports
Place 3: Moto Guzzi V 85 TT Enduro
Chopper / cruiser
For years the Americans have had problems asserting themselves further ahead: although one might think that the chopper / cruiser category should be the domain for the Milwaukee Steel from Harley-Davidson – home game, so to speak.
manufacturer
Winner in the Chopper / Cruiser category: Triumph Bonneville Bobber / Black.
Also Indian as a reborn cult brand among the Long, Flat & You could guess low bikes further up the front: The Indian Scout only made it to seventh place. Little is happening at the top. Triumph’s fat 1200 Bonneville twin stays at one, Ducati’s Diavel models swap places compared to 2018.
1st place: Triumph Bonneville Bobber / Black
Place 2: Ducati XDiavel / S
Place 3: Ducati Diavel / S
Naked bikes
Didn’t we just have the US Indians with the choppers & Cruisers missed: Voilà, here they are. With a model that has caused a sensation in recent months.
manufacturer
The KTM 1290 Super Duke R takes victory in the naked bikes category.
A radically pointed flat tracker, no comparison to the luscious sisters. From zero to second place: The Indian FTR 1200 / S is shaking up the field of naked bikes. After all, KTM’s mighty Duke holds first place, but nobody can rest on their laurels with these tight percentages!
1st place: KTM 1290 Super Duke R.
Place 2: Indian FTR 1200 / S
Place 3: Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 RR / Factory
Crossover
Little movement in the long-legged sports all-rounder category. Which has above all to do with the fact that dealers will continue to have a lot of tried and tested products at the start this season.
manufacturer
Winner of the crossover bikes: BMW S 1000 XR.
BMW’s high-rise S 1000 in XR design asserts itself confidently in first place, which is clearly the gap to Ducati’s Sport-Enduro Multistrada 1260, which also has a 17-inch chassis. The re-sharpened Ducati Hypermotard 950 fun bike can be placed in front of the practical all-purpose weapon Tracer 900 from Yamaha and the small 950 Multistrada.
1st place: BMW S 1000 XR
Place 2: Ducati Multistrada 1260 / S / Pikes Peak
Place 3: Ducati Hypermotard 950 / SP
Modern classics
Welcome to the class of endurance runners. Motorcycles that are perfectly tailored to the “glory days”. By no means old ovens, technically state-of-the-art, but also timelessly beautiful.
manufacturer
First place in the Modern Classics category went to the Kawasaki Z 900 RS.
Not only the renewed victory of Kawasakis in the style of the old Z1 built Z 900 RS is remarkable – even with a percentage increase! She is also the only one who manages to wave the flag of Japan at the top of the podium in this readers’ poll. Overall, the results of the voting indicate stability and continuity.
1st place: Kawasaki Z 900 RS / Cafe
Place 2: BMW R nineT
Place 3: Triumph Thruxton 1200 / R
Beginners
They are the gateway drugs for our scene. Small, problem-free bikes that are addictive, but have really positive side effects – just let feelings of happiness and endorphins flow.
manufacturer
Winner of the entry-level bikes: KTM 390 Duke.
Most likely KTM’s snappy young duke. The single-cylinder bike 390 Duke lands in first place with a clear lead. Well behind, second place is shared by BMWs “World Motorcycles”, the G 310 “made in India” in R and GS versions, and the well-established all-rounders Honda CB 500 F and CBR 500 R.
1st place: KTM 390 Duke
Place 2: BMW G 310 R / GS and Honda CB 500 F / CBR 500 R
Place 3: –
125cc
If there is a surprise in the youngster category, then we will find it in third place in the MOTORRAD readers’ choice 2019. The retromania has now also arrived with the 125s?
manufacturer
1st place in the 125cc class: KTM 125 Duke.
Probably not, but who doesn’t love the cute Honda Monkey, which of course has a high cult factor. All around, of course, there is plenty of spicy goods for the youngsters, above all the “Orangschen” with the 125 Duke, followed by the classy Aprilia RS 125 replica from Bella Italia.
1st place: KTM 125 Duke
Place 2: Aprilia RS 125 Replica
Place 3: Honda Monkey 125
Scooter
Handkerchiefs are called Tempo, and scooters? Vespa, of course! Our readers’ choice also makes this clear year after year. There is always an Italian at the top of the podium, no matter how technical, innovative or sporty other scooters storm onto the street.
manufacturer
In the scooter category, the Vespa GTS Super 300 wins.
But Vespa holds up well and is certainly not resting on its name: For 2019, the flagship GTS was given the new 300 high-performance drive, plus high-tech features such as the smartphone-compatible TFT display.
1st place: Vespa GTS Super 300
Place 2: BMW C evolution
Place 3: BMW C 650 Sport / 650 GT and Yamaha TMAX DX
