A touch of luxury

Fazer friends watch out! From this year two FZ6 Fazers will be available from dealers. But only the S2 model has a new face, higher quality brakes and a solid cast aluminum swingarm.

Never change a running system, «says an English proverb. Never change anything if it works well. Which is why the Japanese left the engine and chassis largely untouched when they developed the FZ6 Fazer S2. After all, it was the best-selling Yamaha the 2006 season the 600 Fazer. A light-footed all-rounder with a good-natured, yet sporty chassis and a 98 hp, easy-turning four-cylinder. This model remains almost unchanged for 2007 and is, in addition to the beginner-oriented 34 hp, also as an insurance model-
cheap 78 hp variant to have.

The S2, on the other hand, received a new cladding that dispenses with some of the chubby curves of its predecessor and instead brings a few jagged, dynamic edges into play. In conjunction with the narrower windshield, the slightly wider, steeper front noticeably reduces turbulence and wind noise in the helmet area. A positive side effect: in the mirrors with longer arms, the view to the rear is better.

The new cockpit is also pleasing. Yamaha did well to use instruments in the style of the FZ1 for the S2 and to forego the illegible digital unit of speedometer and tachometer of the old Fazer depending on the incidence of light. Easier to see, a digital display on the left now provides information on the speed and on the right an analog tachometer.

The bench has also been completely redesigned. The more durable foam was given a narrower contour so that the driver can reach the ground more easily with his feet despite the seat height of 810 millimeters. On top of that, the cover is easier to grip. The footrests, which are two centimeters lower and mounted on cast aluminum carriers, make it possible to sit down at a more comfortable knee angle to ensure the passenger’s seated position is more relaxed. As the S2, the FZ6 Fazer has become more comfortable and suitable for touring.

With a revised engine management map and three-way catalytic converter and lambda probe, the compact in-line four-cylinder now easily falls below the required Euro 3 standard. Nothing has changed in the performance characteristics. As before, the engine starts willingly at the first push of a button, strolls along silky at low revs or turns with undisguised joy far into the double-digit range, provided you operate the smooth six-speed gearbox diligently. The only small drawback: At higher speeds, the four-cylinder accelerates slightly hesitantly when the load changes. The fact that the performance of the measured exactly 100 PS strong FZ6 Fazer S2 is slightly below that of the previous model is solely due to the gusty wind conditions on the day of the measurement. The consumption of five liters per 100 kilometers on country roads is, however, at the level of its predecessor.

The new S2 dispenses with the aluminum box swing arm of the old Fazer. An elegant cast swing arm, also made of aluminum, with a precise axle mount guides the 180-inch rear wheel. It should be lighter and provide more handiness and stability. But only savvy sports drivers will make a subtle difference, if at all, between the extremely stable and precisely controllable FZ6 Fazer and the S2.

The difference in the double disc brake system is noticeably greater. The one-piece brake calipers from the 1000 model FZ1 show their effectiveness on the S2. With less manual force, they grip the 298 brake discs even harder and can be dosed even more finely with a crisp pressure point. A touch of luxury that you should treat yourself to at a price difference of almost 400 euros compared to the standard FZ6 Fazer.
