The eighth

In general, the Swabian appendix ?? le ?? understood as a belittling form. In the case of this new and beautiful eighth note from Yamaha, it is meant lovingly and appreciatively.

Ralf Schneider

This 125cc seduces and deceives its viewer with the appearance of a large one ?? for the benefit of those who drive them. The driver is always greeted with respect and the 125cc enjoys high overtaking prestige. She is included in the circle of honorable vehicles, leaves no trace of a rowdy image and no arrogance in the others. Nothing to stress out young drivers. However, it is less important that overtaking maneuvers can only rarely be carried out and when they are not carried out with the expected vehemence.

But it’s not just the sheer size and weight of the impressive 141 kilograms that make the YZF-R 125 give it their seriousness, but also the technology. The engine runs quietly and in a sophisticated manner, the clutch and gearshift can be operated precisely and with little operator effort. The product planners chose comparatively high-quality components, and their machine looks valuable and well-made down to the last detail. An impression that even after a careful look under the seat cushions and into the depths of the paneling still holds.

So that the dynamics do not fall by the wayside despite all the propriety, the Single, developed and built by the Italian Yamaha subsidiary Minarelli, fully exploits the 11 kW (15 PS) permitted for light motorcycles. He succeeds thanks to four-valve technology and water cooling; After the 125 engines from MZ and Derbi, it is the third engine that has made such a design effort. Injection and a regulated catalytic converter ensure Euro 3-compliant pollutant emissions, and consumption remains extremely modest at 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers. And that despite a high-performance driving style.

Strength of character

In the open version, the YZF runs 120 km / h. Fast enough for enjoyable journeys on winding country roads, which you would like to treat yourself to as a performance-indulgent MOTORRAD tester. The limitation of the maximum speed to 80 km / h required by law for A1 driver’s license holders (which makes little sense) is done via a speed limiter. Coupled with a speedometer signal, it prevents further acceleration when the limit is reached, regardless of the gear. The good thing about it: Full power is available up to 80 km / h, so the first three gears can be turned up to 10500 / min on the tachometer, which corresponds to real 10100 / min. Provided that you shift up quickly and in good time, the acceleration is sufficient to clear the traffic lights. 80 km / h are reached in less than nine seconds. And on long inclines the same tractive effort is available as with the unthrottled engine variant.

Since the drivers of weaker motorcycles usually tackle corners faster than their performance-spoiled colleagues, they need a good chassis and very good tires. In exactly this ranking, the YZF-R 125 has the necessary prerequisites, whereby the chassis with somewhat more saturated damping and finer response of the fork has the predicate ?? very good ?? would also be entitled. Because the steel bridge frame, the swing arm, the wheel axles and the conventional 33 mm fork are stably dimensioned and could handle a lot more power. In this regard, most 125cc have reached a high standard that the new Yamaha connects seamlessly. Thanks to a connecting plate to which the sliding tubes are screwed, not even the powerful single-disc brake in the front wheel can force the fork to twist noticeably.

The YZF-R 125 has succeeded in all of its fundamental characteristics right through to its attractive price. Small reservations remain with the questions of suitability for everyday use and ergonomics. A lowering kit offered by Yamaha for 115 euros suggests that not all young people interested in the adult stature of the 125 cc should be able to cope. And potential passengers have to be capable of suffering. Although the footrests are deep enough for a not too narrow knee angle, the narrow, hard seat padding spoils any comfort. A concession to the excitingly slim cut of the rear fairing.
