Since the old new tank of a Suzuki GT 750 holds much less fuel, the remodeler placed a replacement canister at the rear.

The basis for the Urban Assault KTM 790 from Roland Sands is a 790 Adventure Year of manufacture 2019. All the functions of the modern travel enduro have been retained, as have the handlebars, handles and the display in the cockpit. Visually, however, it went through a metamorphosis.

Water buffalo tank

The silhouette of the Urban Assault KTM 790 is characterized above all by the classically shaped tank. It comes from a Suzuki GT 750. Getting the water buffalo tank on a modern motorcycle with fuel injection was probably much more complex than planned. Roland Sands advises against imitation, with a twinkle in his eye, but expressly advises against: “We wouldn’t do it again because it was torture.” For the line of the Urban Assault KTM 790 it was worth it. And after all, the tank comes from Travis Pastrana’s 199 Triple 750 two-stroke flat-track bike.

Husqvarna Vitpilen bench

Since the fuel volume drops significantly due to the smaller tank – from the original 20 to around 11.4 liters – the customizer decided to make the replacement petrol can part of the conversion. The canister is attached to the rear on the left and gives the classic enduro that certain something. The seat of a Husqvarna Vitpilen draws a flat line between the tank and canister, which ends at the rear end in a small rear pocket that can be replaced with a larger piece of luggage if necessary.

At the rear on the right is the Akrapovic muffler, which is a little steeper than before during the conversion. It is only hidden so far behind the white-green aluminum cover that the bright red brand logo can still be clearly seen.

At the front, the production KTM said goodbye to its windshield and the very modern headlights. Here a round headlight sits behind a grille, which fits in perfectly with the overall picture of a classic adventure bike.

There were almost no changes below the tank and end top line. Only the radiator has been placed differently (now vertically, previously horizontally) and the KTM engine protection has been adapted accordingly.

Conclusion

This is not the first adventure bike conversion from Roland Sands, but his first based on a KTM 790 Adventure. Given that the customer wanted a modern bike with a classic look and a smaller tank, the result is definitely impressive.
