BMW R 1200 CL

At the beginning she was ridiculed and ridiculed? the BMW R 1200 C. But it quickly gathered a large fan base. There’s something about boxer cruiser driving. This can also be seen in the steep used prices.

One of the most unusual new releases of 1997 was undoubtedly the BMW R 1200 C, the first cruiser from Bavaria. Not only did it have plenty of chrome surfaces, but also its driving characteristics, which are unusual for this genre, gave it a brilliant appearance. Thanks to ABS (surcharge around 1000 euros), the BMW decelerates vehemently at all times and, thanks to the Telelever front wheel control, without annoying buckling of the front. The lean angle is unusually large for a cruiser and the chassis is astonishingly comfortable.

With just over 60 HP, the engine is not exactly bursting with power, but there are no complaints regarding reliability ?? Mileage well over 50,000 kilometers without the slightest problems is not uncommon. A coding plug, which can be obtained from a BMW dealer for a few euros and which increases the idling speed a little, helps against the sometimes very annoying constant travel jerk. A measure that most owners have already carried out and that is revealed at the latest on the test drive. In this case, prospective buyers should pay more attention to the shiftability of the transmission. A slight crack when engaging first gear is almost standard. However, if the gears do not want to lock into place and also refuse to use higher gear steps, then caution is required. If the engine suddenly dies on the test lap, it may be due to unnoticed foot contact with the side stand arm placed near the notch, which then interrupts the ignition.

The fact that, after many years of market presence, BMW decided to take the R 1200 C models off the market at the end of 2005 was and is incomprehensible to many motorcycle fans. With over 30,000 models sold worldwide, the success of the unusual cruiser was far greater than most expected. But who knows, maybe the Munich-based company is already working on a successor. Until then, boxer fans will have to continue using used ones R 1200 C content.

Solo number: The Independent model deliberately lacks pillion seat and pegs. For this, BMW donated a small Speedster disc and three-spoke aluminum wheels.

From the outside, prospective buyers should take a closer look at all chrome components and surfaces. This is where the ravages of time gnaw particularly often and almost independently of the maintenance effort of the owner. The rims of older years of construction are particularly affected. The chrome surfaces of the standpipe covers also tend to flake off. Mandatory for models with spoked wheels: knocking off all spokes in order to track down loose or even broken candidates.

Before and after the test drive, it is advisable to look for suspicious traces of oil in the area of the cardan shaft ?? leaking seals are not all that rare and expensive to repair. All in all, however, the R 1200 C has no glaring weaknesses and is one of the particularly reliable used bikes. If the inspection and test drive, during which the ABS should also be checked for function, go smoothly and without problems, nothing stands in the way of a purchase.

BMW

The Montauk variant became a flop in terms of numbers.

With a stock of around 10,000 pieces, the R 1200 C with all its variants (Classic, Independent, Montauk, CL) is one of the most popular cruisers in Germany in terms of numbers. However, many owners are reluctant to part with their sweetheart, as the R 1200 C is one of the rare models in the cruiser segment with an (optional) ABS. And if so, then at steep prices. Nothing goes below 5000 euros? except for accident goods. For CL and Montauk models of the more recent years of construction, in some cases significantly more than 10,000 euros are required. After all, used buyers who have to spend a lot of money on the BMW cruiser can be sure that the loss in value of the exclusive Bajuwarin will be limited. Requirements: regular inspections at the authorized dealer and meticulous care of the vulnerable chrome parts.
