The top dog among the superbikes

In 2010, the BMW S 1000 RR knocked the top dogs from Italy and Japan out of the race. It is also a sought-after object as a used one.

She came, saw, and conquered. The debut of the first “real” Bavarian superbike at the end of 2009 couldn’t be more aptly summed up. All at once, the BMW paralyzed S 1000 RR literally the strong competition from Europe and the Far East: Above all, the Japanese super athletes, which had matured well up to that point, suddenly looked quite old. No wonder, the Munich attack was not only able to score with enormous power (202 hp on the MOTORRAD test bench), but was also equipped with sophisticated assistance systems that were previously unusual in this type of motorcycle. The S 1000 RR was the first production motorcycle to have a traction control system called DTC (“Dynamic Traction Control”) equipped with gyro sensors (subject to a surcharge).

BMW S 1000 RR complex control electronics

Together with the ABS – which in the first series up to model year 2011, however, worked a bit coarser – this means for the pilot: Open the tap, open fire, the complex control electronics take over the rest. Four levels (rain, sport, race and slick mode) are available to bring the power of the in-line four-cylinder safely onto the road, depending on the road conditions. In the test, the BMW S 1000 RR impressed right away and was particularly notable for its pleasant handling, high driving stability and steering precision. For the 2012 model year, the S 1000 RR was a little visually, but technically but thoroughly revised. The ABS now regulates more finely, and with the new engine tuning it clearly gains in linear power delivery and pressure in the middle.

Back then in the test, the 1000 series impressed right away and was particularly characterized by its pleasant handling, high driving stability and steering precision.

sightseeing

As a comparatively young used one, the S 1000 RR is mainly offered first-hand or second-hand. In most cases, that means an above-average, well-cared-for original condition, with a stamped maintenance booklet. You should definitely pay attention to the latter, because the BMW S 1000 RR is in a way a banana motorcycle: It matures at the customer’s, which means that the service measures prescribed by the factory are also carried out during the inspections. This also ensures that all “technical actions” have been completed. Then it is usually from BMW workshops: problem-free bike, no abnormalities. In the MOTORRAD endurance test, the defects (including wear on the intake camshaft, flap control in the exhaust tract) increased towards the end (from 25,000 kilometers), which, according to BMW, would be dealt with in individual cases. The engine itself proved to be extremely stable right up to the end.

Market situation

Used super sports bikes are usually affected by a sharp drop in prices, which is much less pronounced with other types of motorcycle (e.g. cruiser, tourer). With the BMW S 1000 RR, however, this is somewhat curbed by the high value retention that BMW motorcycles usually have. The high cost price, the still young model history and also the high demand all contribute to the fact that the Bavarian superbike is generally not traded as a bargain. Especially since the former base price (15,500 euros for the 2010 model) is more of a theoretical nature. Because many offers are equipped with extras such as the (recommended) combination of ABS and traction control (1220 euros), automatic gearshift (360 euros) or white-red-blue special paint (475 euros).

After all, some of the first-generation BMW S 1000 RRs are available privately for less than 10,000 euros. The model update from 2012 still costs at least 13,000 euros when used. Be careful with the price negotiations: for the fourth year (or at 24,000 kilometers) there is a relatively extensive, almost four-hour inspection in the maintenance plan.
