Advice: BMW K 1200 S
Until 2004, four-cylinder BMWs were only mildly ridiculed in sports driver circles. Then came the K 1200 S and everything changed. As a young used model, the dashing Munich-based model is in demand and by no means cheap.
Jorg Lohse
05/09/2007
The old K-series from BMW, popularly mocked as “flying brick”, never really wanted to open up to the drivers of Japanese racing rolls. Too sedate, it was often said at the regulars’ tables. But then the Munich-based company launched the new one with an aggressive advertising campaign (“Face the Power”) and a full-bodied promise of performance K 1200 S in the stores. The 1200s should produce 167 hp, which the MOTORRAD tests confirmed.
On the street, the K knew how to impress from the start. MOTORRAD tester Werner Koch attested that the “extremely strong, comfortable machine” had fascinating potential “on winding country roads as well as during marathon tours” in the top test (issue 20/2004). The only drawback: “The drinking habits of the K 1200 S require improvement.” 6.8 liters per 100 kilometers rushed into the combustion chambers at 130 km / h. And in the final balance of the MOTORRAD endurance test (issue 24/2006), the Bayern-Four was no less thirsty with an average of 6.6 liters. Especially since expensive Super Plus has to be in the tank for optimal performance. Because of the knock sensors, the engine digests less octane, but it counters this with a loss of power.
The highlight of the new K generation is and remains the revolutionary chassis with Duolever front suspension, in which the steering forces are transmitted by means of a scissor joint. The whole thing is crowned by the special equipment ESA. The suspension and spring preload can be electronically adjusted at the push of a button. There are many machines on the used market that have this extra. In any case, the new BMW, which costs around 15,000 euros, has been ordered from the factory by many first-time owners with numerous extras, “bare” basic versions are the exception. Overall, however, the range is so diverse that used buyers can pick out the K with optional equipment. And since the quirks of the first series have usually already been resolved, the 1200s can be more fun than some previous owners.

The K is generally considered to be very reliable. During the inspection, one should above all pay attention to complete maintenance of the checkbook. It is also advisable to have the BMW authorized dealer check the exact work carried out using the chassis number. If you want to be absolutely sure, you can arrange a workshop check, which costs around 50 euros on average. An accessory muffler sometimes makes the engine run worse. The original pot should therefore still be present when buying.
Market situation
The 1200er-Four is traded briskly, the range is large and varied. Until the end of 2006
Almost 6,000 motorcycles of this type have been registered in Germany (around 17,000 worldwide). The offers are distributed relatively evenly between the years 2005 and 2006 and come mainly from dealers. The K 1200 S is rarely offered for private use. The used four-cylinder from BMW is available from just under 10,000 euros. In this price range, there are predominantly 2005 models with around 30,000 kilometers of mileage. From 12,000 euros there is the 2006 vintage with around 10,000 kilometers on the clock. Most offers are equipped with numerous extras (on-board computer, ESA chassis, heated grips).
