swam over it

In the first model year, the BMW boxer drooped its ears. But a lot of goodwill on the part of the factory made the teething troubles forgotten.

Peter Limmert

50,000 kilometers can then be unwound without a major interruption (see MOTORRAD 16/1995), but the list of defects remained frighteningly long. Does the BMW R 1100 RS the shortcomings of the first models filed?
Generally, yes. Due to numerous modifications, the four-valve boxer is hardly affected by the teething problems that arose in 1993. In 1994, however, the 1100 RS had to go to the authorized workshops again. As part of a recall campaign, BMW replaced the handlebar halves that were at risk of breaking.
The Bavarians had reacted to various complaints in the first year of construction with the 1994 model. The installation of O-rings should eliminate the loud rattling noises of the transmission. Improved valve cover gaskets were also used to prevent the first year oil leaks. And for the engine ventilation, which was overwhelmed by a constantly fast driving style – considerable quantities of the lubricant said goodbye to the air filter box – the technicians had designed a more effective rotary ventilation.
The ergonomics package, which has been standard since 1994, enables the driver to adjust the paneling window, the handlebars and the height of the seat to suit their own taste. A driver information display that shows the fuel level, the oil temperature as well as the gear engaged and the time, as well as a hazard warning lights complete the high-tech offer.
A reinforced V-belt has been used to drive the alternator since 1995. From May of the year, the three-way catalytic converter, which was previously only available on request, is standard. So much for the official model update measures.
Because the gears only locked into place with difficulty in the transmission, which was calmed by means of O-rings, BMW installed a gear unit that was modified once again in the RS since the debut of the R 1100 RT model in late 1995. Redesigned shift claws should make changing gears easier. Since then, RS drivers have complained that gears (especially the second) jump out from time to time. Now the BMW car pool is eagerly waiting for the completely redesigned switching unit of the KS 1200. This could perhaps eliminate the previous deficiencies in the transmission in the four-valve boxer once and for all.
There are also complaints about the clutch. The drive plate of the dry clutch, also changed in 1995, wears out quickly. Then the clutch slips significantly in fifth gear when accelerating.
An injection phenomenon that bothers sensitive drivers is constant travel jerking. It occurs when the position of the two throttle valves is no longer completely synchronous when the throttle grip position is constant. The two flaps are operated by a cable. Its meticulous setting is a prerequisite for synchronous response of the injection system. Due to the criticism, BMW coated the Bowden cables with Teflon. Nevertheless, the phenomenon occurs again and again very quickly, even after a current inspection. The engine block in between prevents a foolproof connection for synchronizing the throttle position in the form of a linkage.
Drivers who activate the 90 PS of the boxer to a sporty pace complain about the low torque of the engine around 6000 rpm.
On the other hand, the chassis with the Telelever fork at the front received unanimous praise, which is superior to any conventional telescopic fork when it comes to compensating for the braking deflection, the so-called anti-dive effect. In conjunction with the Paralever system at the rear – the double-jointed single-sided swing arm is supported by a central gas pressure strut – BMW has designed a chassis that impresses customers in terms of touring suitability, ABS use and individual adjustment of the suspension elements.
Only the front brake system, regardless of the ABS, has to be accused of a shifting pressure point, because the uneven return of the brake pistons provokes different brake lever travel. Disassembling the brake calipers and re-greasing the surfaces brings temporary improvement.
More than 8,000 of the BMW R 1100 RS are on the road today. The prices for used copies depend less on the number of kilometers than on the accessories. Machines with Kat and ABS are around 2500 marks more expensive than without. The base prices range between 14,000 marks (born in 1993) and 20,000 marks (1996).
It is remarkable how BMW succeeded in remedying most of the initial deficiencies within a year after a rather messed up start in 1993 through the authorized workshops. Even more remarkable: how the customers honor the efforts of the Bavarian plant with an unrestricted desire to buy.

Reading experiences

Only in exceptional cases do significant weaknesses in the gearbox and injection system shake the opinion of the BMW R 1100 RS drivers about driving the best of all possible machines.

I bought my used BMW R 1100 RS in August 1993 with a distance of 11,500 kilometers for 18,500 marks. Decisive for the purchase was the ingenious chassis, the ergonomics package (I’m over two meters tall), the low-maintenance cardan and of course the ABS. In the meantime the machine has a good 55,000 kilometers on the clock, and my initial enthusiasm has given way to disillusionment. The following annoyances and damage occurred: a rattling gearbox that was replaced under warranty. An improvement was only noticeable for about eight weeks. A gearbox that is difficult to shift when cold, a recall campaign to replace the handlebar, a few other potential defects were checked on this occasion. At 41,500 kilometers, a valve spring plate in the right cylinder head broke with the effect that the head, pistons, valves, camshaft and a lot more had to be replaced. All in all, a loss of a good 2300 marks, of which I had to bear almost 1000 marks myself after a goodwill arrangement. Further shortcomings: shifting pressure point of the front brake and a performance drop at 6000 rpm. I have the impression that the pre-series tests have been transferred to customers at BMW.Andre Matthia, Tangendorf At 8600 km, the Fallert company converted to superbike handlebars. Advantage: more upright sitting position, better contact with the passenger, the pain in the shoulder and neck area have disappeared. When the odometer reading is 11800, the first Bridgestone BT 50 tires are changed to Metzeler ME 1 Front and ME Z2. Conclusion: poor straight-line stability. Broken speedometer cable at 18200 kilometers, changed tires back to Bridgestone BT 50 after changing tires. Fallert had 40 millimeter higher handlebar brackets installed, and Wudo Streamline windshield was also installed – better wind protection for driver and passenger. At kilometer 40,000, have the right cylinder head gasket changed as part of the inspection. At kilometer 41,000 the speedometer cable broke again. After two years of driving, I can only say that I have not regretted the purchase. Dieter Keipinger, Waldgassen I bought my R 1100 RS, built in 1994, relatively cheaply in 1995 with a mileage of 3800 kilometers. The odometer is now at 38,000. In customer service, the handlebars were exchanged as part of the recall, and the shock absorber was leaking at 17,000 kilometers. After 25,000 kilometers I needed a new speedometer cable and new gas cables. When the mileage was 30,000, the brake pads were due. Besides these few little things, I’m absolutely happy with the RS. The chassis is just a dream, the engine has the right power for me and, above all, has never let me down. Even in winter I drive 80 kilometers to work every day. The ergonomics package is a great thing, so I don’t have to bend to the manufacturer’s dimensions like with other machines. Wind and weather protection is good, especially the adjustable windshield. The case system is also great, only the top case is a joke.Thomas Geibler, Altdorf In July 1993 I got myself a new RS with ABS and Kat. Since then I have driven a good 50,000 kilometers. Right at the beginning, the fuel gauge in the driver information display went on strike. I have had the best experiences with the Metzeler ME Z1 / Z2. The rear tire lasts around 12,000, the front one has to be changed after around 6,000 kilometers. The cases are absolutely waterproof even in torrential rain. But BMW should improve the transmission, which always draws attention to itself when shifting gears. Volker Ohrlich, Bondorf The lot has decided: Jurgen Stork from Bonn receives the 100 marks
