Big siblings are mean. The wisdom from everyday family life can easily be transferred to motorcycle life. Take, for example, the 999, which for its short model life always had to vegetate in the shadow of the century design of the 916 series. Although the novelty of 2003 with its controversial packaging can rationally do a lot better: From the very first contact, it offers the pilot a better ergonomic package including numerous setting options – from the notches to the lever to the tank-bench combination for the single-seater monoposto variant.

In terms of drive technology, too, the 999 is its predecessor in the bag. Although the Testrastretta engine with the distinctive, narrow cylinder heads was already throbbing in the 998: thanks to a modified airbox and sophisticated manifold design with different pipe cross-sections, the 999 has noticeably more revving and fewer load changes. The whole thing is embedded in a chassis, with which in terms of balance and handiness you can literally drive circles around the stubborn predecessors. The 999 is also impressive in terms of economy. Thanks to the more efficient structure – the 999 manages with around a third fewer parts – the maintenance effort is also reduced considerably: thanks to the shorter set-up times, a third of the time is saved compared to the 916 series.

Ducati specialists consider the 999 to be very reliable. But what not. means that you can buy a superbike with a Testastretta engine blindly. The electronic problems that were also criticized in the MOTORRAD endurance test have now been as good as eliminated. It is important that the two-part coil plugs on the affected 999s from model year 2003 are replaced with those with a molded ignition cable. This means that consequential damage to the control unit is as good as impossible. There is also a risk of an electric disaster if the main current relay underneath the battery in the fairing keel is exposed to massive spray water. Prudent workshops have modified the bracket accordingly. At the rear of the frame, the exhaust bracket should be checked for stress cracks. On some 2003 and 2004 models with Ohlins chassis (999 S, 999 R), the fork seals can leak (among other things if they are not used for a long time). The classic test point for all Ducatis: regular timing belt changes.
Market situation
Looking at the sales of the 999 is initially misleading, because the range on the market is very high compared to the distribution. Accordingly, interested parties can specifically pick out the model they want. The older 2003 and 2004 models are just as recommendable as the facelifted, more powerfully motorized 999 from year of construction 2005. Some dealers even certify that the Testastretta heads in the original 999s are better made from the factory. Tip: Better to take a little more money in hand and look for a well-kept 999 for 8,000 euros. Pay attention to the desired details (mono / biposto, frame color, brake, swing arm).

In 2005 (front) a cautious update follows externally. The new, now 140 hp, engine is much more brilliant.
2002 Presentation of the 999 with Testastretta engine of the predecessor 998 at the Italian motorcycle fair EICMA. What is new, however, is the exhaust system with U-Kat, wiring harness with CAN bus technology, two-arm swing arm and radial brake and clutch hand pump. 136 hp S version of the 999 with Ohlins chassis, funnel-shaped oil pan and titanium connecting rods. 999 R with a modified bore / stroke ratio and 139 hp peak performance as a homologation vehicle for the Superbike World Championship. Standard-999 and 999 S optionally available as one or two-seater (mono- / biposto). Prices for the 2003 model year: 16,995 euros (999); 20995 euros (999 S); 30000 Euro (999 R).

2005 Standard 999 with a revised engine from the S plus rear swing arm in box shape, black anodized exhaust cover, toothed belt cover with cooling air duct, revision of cladding, fenders, rear-view mirrors.
