Standard or S-Class? Ducati buyers usually opt for the better equipped S-types with Ohlins chassis – this is also the case with the Multistrada. The second-hand offer for the long-legged V2 also looks accordingly: As a rule, the Multistrada is offered as the MTS 1200 S with electronically controlled Ohlins chassis (abbreviation DES) in either the touring or the sport version. In the German version, the ABS was part of the series in all Multistrada versions; abroad, at least for the first generation of the standard version, it had to be ordered as an option. So be careful if a supposedly cheap model is offered in regions close to the border.

Multi as well as multifunctional: The control switches are also used to carry out various setting work on the control electronics. However, it takes some getting used to.

The original cases (standard on Touring models) go well with the
Style, but not convincing: fiddly operation, not very solid, small storage space.

Looks complicated, but it’s not. The Skyhook landing gear introduced in 2013 reacts semi-actively. Select the driving mode, the electronics do the rest.

No playful design, but a large display on which the large amount of information is easy to read. This means that the multi scores points right from the start.

What you should know

The Ducati Multistrada 1200 / S is anything but a GS in Italian. The 1200 is packed with the finest electronics. Does that work in the long run?

Jorg Lohse

07/09/2015

Anyone who has once indulged in the luxury of a luxury class automobile “in used” will initially have been enthusiastic about all the electronic helpers in every nook and cranny. But what if the e-support suddenly twitches with age? Also interested in used for the 2010 newly introduced Ducati Multistrada 1200 will therefore look at the fat electronics package of the V-Twin with great skepticism.

Solid result in the 50,000 km endurance test

What to do when a microchip wears out and with it the entire chassis of the Ducati Multistrada 1200 is paralyzed? A look at the MOTORRAD long-term test cycles can be reassuring at first: Although it was crammed with electronics up to the ruff (adjustable engine mapping, traction control, electronic chassis), the Multistrada worked amazingly flawlessly over 50,000 test kilometers. And in the classic mechanics disciplines, too, it delivered pleasing values in contrast to some of its sister models: “A solid result,” says MOTORRAD test boss Gert Thole after dismantling and measuring the V-Twin.

The question remains which type of driver Ducati Multistrada 1200 appeals? The 17-inch wheels with road tires make it clear: off-road trips that the competitor BMW R 1200 GS would have to tackle are not their thing. It relies on committed (land) road pilots who accelerate and expect a great mix of sport and comfort. This works particularly well with the S version of the Multistrada 1200 (electronic Ohlins chassis) and even a bit better with the semi-active Skyhook chassis (from 2013).

Market situation and inspection

Current market situation Ducati Multistrada 1200 / S.

Market situation

Standard or S-Class? Ducati buyers usually opt for the better equipped S-types with Ohlins chassis – this is also the case with the Multistrada. Just under 20 percent order the new, around 3000 euros cheaper standard version of the Ducati Multistrada 1200 with a conventional chassis. The second-hand offer for the long-legged V2 looks accordingly: As a rule, the Multi is offered as the Ducati Multistrada 1200 S with electronically controlled Ohlins chassis (DES) in either the touring or the sport version. The latter is characterized by various carbon parts, the Touring includes side cases, heated grips and a main stand as standard.

In the German version, the ABS was part of the series on all Ducati Multistrada 1200 / S; abroad, at least for the first generation of the standard version, it had to be ordered as an option. So be careful if a supposedly cheap model is offered in regions close to the border. It starts for the first years of construction (2010/11) at just over 8,000 euros, the respective S version of the Multi costs around 1,500 euros more than the standard version as a used one. The high mileage shows that the 1200 series is a popular motorhome.

sightseeing

After around five years of construction, there are still a lot of well-maintained Ducati Multistrada 1200 / S in the authorized workshops in the usual sales exchanges or at dealerships. And you should pay particular attention to this checkbook maintenance with the Ducati. After all, a considerable number of so-called service and safety recalls (14 in total!) Accompany the still young model history of the 1200s. Some things were fixed with a software update, others resulted in major interventions (e.g. the complete standpipe change on the S-types with Ohlins chassis). If the maintenance booklet is stamped through accurately, the Ducati Multistrada 1200 / S should be up to date.

Depending on the (non-) maintenance by the previous owner, the chain can quickly reach its limit. The complete exchange costs around 350 euros. The 12,000 and 36,000 inspections of the Ducati Multistrada 1200 / S are relatively cheap, very expensive (with around eight hours of work!) The 24,000 and 48,000 inspections (belt replacement and valve clearance).
