Second-hand advice Kawasaki Versys (2006 – 2009)
Swiss Army Knife on Two Wheels
It is the Swiss Army Knife on two wheels, the motorized Leatherman – but unfortunately not nearly as popular as a new machine. And thus a tip for used buyers.

The second-hand writer indulging in investigative journalism is a bit frustrated at the beginning of his research, because the information from his best informant from the scene is “One of the most problem-free motorcycles that it from Kawasaki ever existed. ”And it gets worse, because the other dealers questioned also say the same thing. So are we dealing with a merciless bore, with the infamous bread-and-butter motorcycle that does nothing wrong, but above all no fun? No! On the contrary, anyone who has ever had the pleasure of feeling in an extremely relaxed seating position how lively and powerful 64 HP can be, how super-handy and easy to drive a motorcycle can be, will treat the Versys topic with pleasure. It’s not really surprising either, because in 2006 Kawasaki simply took the good basis of the ER-6, trimmed the engine for more pressure in the lower and middle speed range (which cost eight hp, but nobody will miss it), donated better equipment, indulged the whole thing a higher quality workmanship and made everything better. Almost everything, because the Versys design, which at least comes from Shunji Tanaka, the designer of the legendary Mazda MX-5, takes – to put it mildly – getting used to. Which then took revenge in the store. The Versys has always been considered the better motorcycle, but the ER-6 was sold much better. With the extensive facelift in 2010, which almost corresponded to a model change, the design was a bit more pleasing and the very few Versys weaknesses (headlights, pillion comfort, mirrors, windshield) were successfully eliminated, but the insider tip status will probably not change much. Too bad!

At this point there is no need to warn against wild conversions, because the Versys almost always remains in series condition. The assembly of a case system and a better protective vario lens (mostly MRA) as well as fine work on the headlight are already the most popular modifications. Occasionally there is an accessory exhaust or a shorter translation to the device – in such (rather rare) cases, please pay attention to the papers or entries. The (standard) exhaust is one of the few Versys parts that you should pay special attention to during a test drive. If the bell chirps or rings abnormally, a loose baffle plate can be the culprit. Since refilling the oil is only a bit cumbersome with a funnel, negligent Versys owners like to leave this service point unaffected – an Ostands test after the test drive can reveal a lot about the care mentality of the previous owner. The same applies to the usual test points, such as B. the chain. Does it all sound unspectacular? It is. Apart from a few rust problems (mostly on the subframe), there are no typical quirks.
Market situation
“From first hand and with few kilometers.” That is a phrase that is often found in connection with Versys offers and a key attraction for bargain hunters. Dealers and private sellers are roughly equally represented. Versys first-time owners are seldom beginners, more experienced motorcyclists who have exceeded their 30s for a long time, but then no longer come to motorcycling as often as planned. Mileage of less than 10,000 kilometers is more the rule than the exception, even in the first model year. The Versys is more popular in rural areas than in metropolitan areas. The reverse is that grandfather clocks are more likely to be found in the city. There are still quite a few demonstrators and daily registrations – also and especially from the first series, which did not necessarily make things easier for dealers after the 2010 model change. Also offered: parallel imports from other EU countries, but then mostly without ABS.
