Buying a used classic tourer is not easy. Because these motorcycles are usually moved extensively in wind and weather. Especially models like the BMW R 1100 RT or Honda presented here Pan European often have mileage far beyond 50,000 kilometers. The motorcycles can easily cope with these long distances. This is also shown by the experience from MOTORRAD’s endurance tests, which on typical touring bikes can even be twice the distance instead of the usual 50,000 kilometers. There were no serious mistakes. Nevertheless, if the odometer readings are high, expensive repairs must be expected at some point: if worn out spring elements need to be replaced, bearings are worn out or the seat has to be reupholstered. If you carefully watch the market and don’t commit yourself to a specific model, you can also find a well-maintained touring bike with low mileage. BMW R 1100 RT
Touring quickly, that would translate the abbreviation of the R 1100 RT particularly well. Although the BMW is not a lightweight with its lush 285 kilograms, it can be moved surprisingly sportily. And when driven solo, the mighty windjammer is almost considered handy by boxers. Even with two travelers and fully loaded with luggage, the tour ship stays clean on course, neither rocking nor stirring spoil the joy of sailing. Only the main stand, which touches down early in two-person operation, is a reminder to drive more moderately. With the height-adjustable disc, the 1100 not only has great wind and weather protection ex works. In addition to the ABS, the standard equipment of the RT also includes a sophisticated case system that only needs to be clipped on and secured by folding in the handle. The heated grips, which are mandatory for BMW motorcycles, are available in almost all used offers. Another popular extra: the on-board radio. The engine, on the other hand, comes across as a bit lackluster: the boxer revs up tough and annoying with constant travel jolts and fine vibrations in the handlebar ends. The gearbox is annoying to shift, intermediate gears creep in again and again. Interested parties should pay particular attention to regular inspections at RT. In particular, you have to check the cardan drive for possible oil loss at the seals.

As a luxuriously equipped full dresser, the BMW R 1100 RT is the touring machine par excellence, but has deficits when it comes to engine and transmission coordination. Prices and mileage are high.
Honda ST 1100 Pan European
The hardest hours of the Pan European are long in the past. Because when it was presented in 1990, the motorcycle world was initially shocked: is so much fairing allowed to be a motorcycle? Sales got off to a slow start, but then the ST 1100 captured the hearts of tourers in one stroke. Your V4 engine scores with a unique, sovereign power development, and the low-reaction and almost maintenance-free cardan shaft is accompanied by excellent ergonomics for the on-board staff with perfect weather protection. Hundreds of kilometers can be covered in one go without getting tired. In addition, the moderate consumption, which enables very long ranges. In 1992, Honda went one better. For a surcharge there was the Pan Euopean with ABS (from 1996 additionally with composite braking system) and the traction control called TCS. Thus the Pan European was certain of the technical dominance in the super tourer scene. The Honda performed confidently in the MOTORRAD endurance test. Here the Pan European was challenged over 100,000 kilometers. The sober, but all the more brilliant result: No component moved at or above the wear limit. The only drawback was that the ST had no exhaust gas cleaning system until the end of the model in 2000. The used ST 1100 is only sold very reluctantly? which also has to do with the fact that the 1300 successor Pan has to struggle with chassis weaknesses.

Honda VFR
Are you looking for the best of both worlds? Suitable for a relaxed holiday tour for two as well as for a fiery hot ride over the home route? Then look out for a VFR. The abbreviation has proven itself over a quarter of a century. The VFR is considered a sporty all-rounder, which also shows its own charm and character thanks to the technically sophisticated V4 engine. The models of the third (manufacturer code RC 46/1) and fourth (RC 46/2) generation are interesting for our price bracket of 5000 euros. Whereby the RC 46/1 ?? from 1998 in the program ?? is clearly considered to be the touring bike in the VFR family. Fans of the sporty set-up will have more fun with the RC 46/2 (from year of construction 2002), the chassis of which is much tighter, but by no means less comfortable. As a further advantage, many last-generation VFR models have ABS on board. However, »the Zwo« has gained significantly in weight compared to the RC 46/1 (from 237 to 253 kilograms). For this purpose it is equipped with a variable valve control, which is supposed to increase the draft by switching from two to four valve operation. The sophisticated technology is perceived as a nuisance when driving. However, there is hardly any need to worry about reliability: The VFR always cut a good figure in the MOTORRAD endurance tests. The interest in used machines is subdued. That’s why you have good cards in prize poker.

Triumph Sprint ST
Sporty and touristic at the top level, plus delicious delicacies such as the single-sided swing. Look familiar to you? No wonder, the template for the Sprint ST is Honda’s long-running VFR. However, with the three-cylinder engine, the Triumph has its very own character, which makes it unmistakable again. The Triple is an agile and at the same time reliable engine. The dynamic start is supported by a stable chassis, which also offers sufficient travel comfort and does not weaken even when fully loaded with luggage and pillion passenger. Appropriately, the ST could be ordered with suitcases and a topcase. But the high additional costs (around 1500 euros) and the cumbersome attachment (silencer must be lowered) put off many interested parties again. The second-hand offer is very good, and the price-performance ratio is attractive.

Ducati ST4
A real Ducati that also offers a real comfort bonus? Is there. It is called ST4 and it is primarily aimed at friends of exclusive travel. Booking a Ducati trip alone is not easy: The offers of used ST4s are limited, the price level is typical of the brand, high. In most cases, however, the equivalent value is correct. Ducatis are well cared for and offered with comparatively low mileage, botched or properly ridden specimens are the exception. Of course, despite perfect maintenance, the technology can cause problems. In the MOTORRAD long-distance test, the ST4 showed clear weaknesses after 50,000 kilometers. Important engine parts (clutch, rocker arms and rocker arms, camshafts, valves) showed serious damage. It’s a shame, because the Duc with the super sports engine from the cult bike 916 is a great motorcycle with a convincing chassis from a dynamic perspective? Suitable for all situations in life that are approached upright and casually seated.

Anyone who tours long and extensively needs storage space. It is good if the motorcycle is already equipped with an optimally adapted luggage system ex works. Especially since the pannier racks are usually discreetly integrated into the vehicle and do not spoil the rear as annoying steel antlers when driving without a suitcase. If you want to use your motorcycle primarily for traveling, you should therefore consider specific offers including a case system when searching. As a rule, however, retrofitting is not a problem either. If you already have mounts for a luggage system, you should buy the appropriate original goods from the manufacturer. Otherwise, the (mostly cheaper) accessory systems are recommended. Carrier solutions that can be removed using quick-release fasteners are smart (www.sw-motech.de, www.jfmotorsport.de).
Navigation devices – guaranteed to be a hit
Standard for cars, more and more popular for motorcycles: the navigation system for bikers.
Navigation devices provide valuable services when traveling by not only helping with route guidance but also in finding the nearest petrol station, a hotel or even a workshop in the area. But not every commercially available navigator is suitable for use on a bike. In practice, the TomTom Rider 2 (from 499 euros) and the Garmin Zumo 400 (from 599 euros) have proven themselves at MOTORRAD. Both devices are equipped as standard with maps for Germany, Austria and Switzerland (Garmin also with the Czech Republic), digital maps for all of Europe can be purchased separately. While the Zumo 400 shines with numerous features such as route recording, automatic zoom function and options for off-road navigation as well as a brilliant display, the TomTom scores above all with its robust mount and the smart menu navigation that is specially tailored to the motorcycle.
Yamaha XJ 900 S Diversion
The 900 Diversion is the bike for the rational person, as it offers great travel comfort at a bargain price. The XJ 900 S Diversion got off to a successful start in 1994: high-torque motor, low-maintenance cardan drive, attractive price were weighty selling points. The latter in particular has held up to this day. There are quite a few XJ 900s on the used market that look like they’re licked. The previous owners also have a lot to offer when it comes to accessories. This means that offers can always be found in which a higher windshield and a set of panniers increase the tour quality even more. The spring elements have also often been significantly improved with higher quality, more appealing springs and dampers from the accessories. One of the weak points of diversion, in addition to heavy weight, is ?? 276 kilograms are simply too much for a half-clad 900? also the exorbitant gasoline consumption, which breaks the ten-liter mark at accelerated travel speed on the motorway. With the throttle in control, the XJ can be driven under five liters. A special tip for tires: In addition to the Bridgestone BT 020, the Metzeler ME Z4 has also proven itself. In the MOTORRAD long distance test ?? also with this model over 100,000 kilometers ?? Cracks were found in the exhaust manifold. The problem can be solved cheaply by welding. However, it is advisable to pay attention to this when visiting the site. If the shaft drive needs to be changed, a thin synthetic oil (SAE 75W90) should be used.
