Retro helmet in practice test

Shoei has introduced a new helmet with a retro look. The so-called Shoei EX-Zero has been available since July 2018. We had the opportunity to try out the new retro helmet.

Classic look meets modern technology: something like this could be the motto when developing the new one Shoei EX-Zero. The new Shoei hat is optically based on the classic Shoei EX from the 80s. Compared to the oldie, Shoei has given the new EX-Zero a lot of modern features that are also used in other top models from the Japanese helmet manufacturer. The integrated CJ-3 visor, which by the way is available in the three variations “clear”, “dark” and “yellow”, is adjustable. Three different setting positions are possible.
First impression of the Shoei EX-Zero
In the first practical test, the operation of the visor was pleasing. The excellent seat, the comfortable putting on and taking off, the large field of vision and the good ventilation, which ensures a cool head even at high outside temperatures, also attracted positive attention. The other side of the coin are relatively loud wind noises, which are only really noticeable at high speeds of 120 km / h. In the first practical test, cross goggles that are bombproof, but are not included in the scope of delivery, have also proven their worth. Thanks to the integrated CJ-3 visor, which can be adjusted in three positions and is initially available in the colors clear, dark and yellow, the retro helmet can also be used without glasses without any problems. Matching helmet shields can also be retrofitted, which, according to Shoei, will be available soon.

The new EX-Zero is available in three shell sizes. Incidentally, the fiberglass shell consists of five layers. This means that the new EX-Zero is available in sizes XS to M, L and XL to XXL. In addition, all inner pads are removable. Thus, the upholstery can be cleaned comfortably and easily. The manufacturer specifies a weight of around 1,150 grams. For comparison: the Shoei top model, the X-Spirit III racing helmet, weighs around 1,250 grams as a full-face helmet.
Shoei opted for the tried and tested double D-ring system for the closure. The new Shoei EX-Zero is initially available in the seven color variants “Off White”, “Black”, “Matt Black”, “Shine Red”, “Brilliant Yellow”, “Basalt Gray” and “Equation TC-2”. The new retro helmet has been available since July 2018 and costs 399 euros. The model variant with decor was added a little late and with a price of 459 euros a bit more expensive in comparison.
The new Shoei EX-Zero is already the second “retro” helmet that has made it into the Shoei model range. Almost two years ago, the Shoei JO, a retro-look jet helmet, celebrated its premiere, which is now available in many other designs. It can be assumed that the new EX-Zero will also receive more chic decors in the future.
