Bridgestone Battlax S22
Markus Jahn, mps photo studio
The test winner S 22 immediately took the lead in this test thanks to its exorbitantly good driving performance on the country road.
Weight: front 4.5 kg, rear 6.8 kg
Country road / sport (140 points, 1st place): Traditionally, the Japanese always put the most stable gums in the test, this also applies to this very fresh baking mix from Bridgestone. The new S 22 takes up the good properties of the previous generation (S 20 / S 21), but can set new records with its first-class handiness. Anyone who runs it very sportily (on the home track or during race training) will be impressed by the razor-sharp precision with which the motorcycle can be steered on the tightest lines around the corner. This makes the S 22 deservedly king on the country road.
Wet test (90 points, 2nd place): The predecessor S 21 already impressed in the rain with its rich grip and easily assessable border area. The S 22 ties in with this and did not really slip up in our test. Compared to the competition, its adhesive reserves are less pronounced in an inclined position – but that is not a real drawback.
Conclusion: A great debut for the latest sports tire from the Japanese. Thanks to its exorbitantly good performance on the country road, the S 22 immediately took the lead in this test. Even in the rain he stays at the top when it comes to sport.
MOTORCYCLE Rating: very good
Continental Sport Attack 3
Markus Jahn, mps photo studio
The Continental Sport Attack 3 is the sports tire for every day. Its qualities do not deteriorate in adverse weather.
Weight: front 4.4 kg, rear 6.5 kg
Country road / sport (136 points, 3rd place): Number three is a well-known figure in this test field, but that’s by no means scrap iron, pardon scrap rubber. Conti’s athletes have always been enthusiastic about their extremely quick presence. No sooner have you set off than the attack can be launched. Those who value extreme handiness above all will be delighted with the Sport Attack 3. For some bikes, which are stubborn per se, this looks like a real suspension treatment. But if the area of use becomes very sporty (race training), you have to accept slight flexing movements and minimal nervousness.
Wet test (90 points, 2nd place): On the test Yamaha R1, the Sport Attack 3 staged surprisingly well in the rain, much better than in the 2017 test, where a BMW S 1000 RR maltreated the rubber. The Conti offers plenty of grip on wet roads, and here, too, it is easy to handle paired with good transparency.
Conclusion: The sports tire for every day. Home track fans will love the super-handy Conti for its outstanding dynamics and appreciate that its qualities do not diminish when the weather turns a little adverse.
MOTORCYCLE Rating: very good
Dunlop Sportsmart MK3
Markus Jahn, mps photo studio
The new Sportsmart MK3 is a very pointed tire. Anyone who drives their superbike mainly in full load mode will appreciate the stability of the Dunlop.
Weight: front 4.5 kg, rear 6.9 kg
Country road / sport (128 points, 6th place): Dunlop’s sports tires traditionally require a hard hand on the accelerator, which was previously the case for the previous generation (including Sportsmart 2 Max), and the latest model also wants to be moved accordingly. This means that the MK3 cannot really show its advantages in normal everyday operation on the country road, due to the comparatively hard basic structure there is a lack of transparency and feedback. This can only be felt better the harder the use gets. If the pace is very sporty (e.g. in race training), it scores points Dunlop then mainly because of its excellent stability.
Wet test (81 points, 6th place): There are no real slip-ups, but the cautious feedback runs like a red thread through our test protocol even on wet slopes – feedback and assessability are always cautious, so that the bottom line is that there is no real trust in the rain wants to discontinue the actually existing detention reserves.
Conclusion: The new Sportsmart MK3 is a very pointed tire. Anyone who drives their superbike mainly in full load mode will appreciate the stability of the Dunlop. For others it remains too difficult to assess.
MOTORCYCLE Rating: Good
Metzeler Sportec M7 RR
Markus Jahn, mps photo studio
The Metzeler Sportec M7 RR remains our recommendation as an all-rounder rubber.
Weight: front 4.3 kg, rear 6.8 kg
Country road / sport (134 points, 4th place): In the meantime also an oldie in the test field, but it remains in everyday sporting use Metzeler continues to be a convincing endurance runner on the country road. Anyone who attaches great importance to good assessability will be able to enthusiastically hone around the corner with the M7 RR. However, it takes some warm-up time, at first the Munich rubber is quite grumpy, i.e. stubborn. If the operating temperature is right, the good feedback is accompanied by precise steering behavior, with which it can really shine on the home route. Even if it is becoming increasingly sporty, its stability is still more than sufficient.
Wet test (87 points, 4th place): In the first few meters, the stubbornness on wet roads may be irritating, but when you are in the flow, the M7 RR also scores in the rain with its generous grip reserves and pleasant handiness.
Conclusion: Clearly, the competition has become stronger in the last few years, which means that the M7 is left behind in some test chapters. Which doesn’t mean he’s gotten worse. It remains our recommendation as an all-rounder rubber.

Michelin Power RS+
Markus Jahn, mps photo studio
Sports tires in a very, no, actually uncompromisingly super sports definition. The Michelin men are making an impressive statement. As a plus version, now with more all-round benefits.
Weight: front 4.3 kg, rear 5.9 kg
Country road / sport (131 points, 5th place): With the abbreviation RS hat Michelin the power family is clearly trimmed in the direction of racing again – and would like to prove its competence in this segment as a supplier to MotoGP. The youngest creature of the Gaulish gummy bakers can therefore only show its advantages when the pace is really tough. In the test two years ago we gave the clear recommendation “race track tip”. Its highlights: feedback, stability and endurance. With the newly tuned RS + rear tire, super sporty natures have to accept compromises on the racetrack. But the plus version is now a little more harmonious on the country road lap.
Wet test (82 points, 5th place): With the overall but tough set-up, the Michelin is not for everyone in the rain. After all, the new plus version now has a little more grip on the rear wheel, which is why the traction is noticeably better in wet conditions.
Conclusion: Sports tires in a very, no, actually uncompromisingly super sports definition. The Michelin men are making an impressive statement. As a plus version, now with more all-round benefits.

Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa II
Markus Jahn, mps photo studio
Our buying tip comes from Pirelli. The DRC II is the first choice when a sporty tire that is still suitable for everyday use is to be fitted.
Weight: front 4.3 kg, rear 6.6 kg
Country road / sport (137 points, 2nd place): Although the sister model Rosso III is actually more of the everyday athlete, the DRC II can also impressively present itself in this more house route-oriented company. The elaborate coordination with the three mixtures at the rear (there are two at the front) comes across impressively in all driving situations: even the super sporty one Pirelli scores in the country road hunt with wonderful handiness and precise steering behavior. If the pace is tightened, the level remains extremely high with confidence-inspiring stability. In direct comparison with the Bridgestone, the DRC II is a little behind in terms of agility.
Wet test (91 points, 1st place): The perfectly balanced mixture also works in the rain. The DRC II can be steered over the irrigated test track with an amazing traction. Even in an inclined position, it offers plenty of grip reserves. Thanks to its clear feedback, the Pirelli is always easy to assess.
Conclusion: With a very close gap to the front, Pirelli is in second place in this comparison. The DRC II is the first choice when you want to mount a sporty tire that is still suitable for everyday use.

General statement in the test protocol
Maltreated by 200 HP, kneaded by 112 Newton meters on a nearly 2.5 kilometer long test course, which is an ideal mixture of a crisp country road and a tricky race track – and what is the general statement in the MOTORRAD test protocol? No abnormalities – at least none in the negative sense.
Markus Jahn, mps photo studio
At this point we have to state that the current sports range of the six premium brands takes this test section lightly. Critical situations in which the Panik-P pulsates in the visor cutout? Unavailable! Could one now advise blind tasting and recommend everything to every type of driver? Here is a clear no! No question about it, everyone can get the basic supply with plenty of grip, you wouldn’t make a mistake on a blind date on the rim. But depending on the nature with which you move through the landscape, there are correspondingly good, but also better tires for every type of driver. A look at the points allocation helps to filter out the tire that suits a person. There are hardly any measurable differences in the cold running properties – i.e. the rollout from the garage entrance. The differences appear even more clearly if you attach great importance to the points of handling or stability, accuracy or feedback. On the basis of this detailed breakdown, one or the other driver type could then be accommodated by a tire type that does not occupy the podium in our placement. For example, those who want to take an uncompromisingly sporty approach will be delighted with the rigid rubbers from Michelin and Dunlop, which are strongly tailored to racer needs.
Sports tires in the wet test
An impressive performance in the rain is now also at the top of the specifications for the development and construction of ultra-stable sports rubbers. And similar to the previous chapter on Landstrasse, all test subjects in this test field must be certified as having sufficient basic supplies of grip when it rains. Now the world belongs to the brave, and we are now putting it to the test. Something that you wouldn’t even dare to do in real life due to numerous imponderables – exploring the limit! It can be done relatively safely if the appropriate test area is available.
Markus Jahn, mps photo studio
The MOTORRAD wetness test is just as close as in a top-class race.
This year we used the proving ground of Bridgestone near the Italian capital Rome, but a similarly designed surrounding can also be found with all other manufacturers, whether they are called Conti, Dunlop, Metzeler / Pirelli or Michelin: permanently watered circuits with standard asphalt surfaces without large friction coefficient jumps or nasty deposits that are unpredictable emerging bitumen strips. All systems are the same: They enable the almost scientific analysis of adhesive properties and the design of the limit area, documented by precise data recording, from which it can be deduced where which tire slips due to a lack of grip. The differences themselves are not very great, but they actually do exist. And interestingly, the high-precision data recording also matches the subjective impressions à la Popometer: Which profiles feel smoother than others, which can be steered more safely over slippery terrain? The addition is usually the same for all tires: silica – a silica compound – in the rubber compound, thanks to which the tires build up a certain suppleness even below the ideal temperature window and thus interlock with the asphalt. But just stirring in a lot of silica is no longer enough. Especially not with sports tires, which also have to work in high-performance mode. Because the other side of the coin shows itself in the dry, where these tires, which are primarily designed for rain, would quickly overheat and dangerously smear.
Our tire test shows very clearly how far the development in this segment has advanced. Because the best rain tires do not show any real nakedness in this test, even when driving on country roads on dry asphalt.
The motorcycle in the tire test
Yamaha YZF-R1 While the existing 17-inch dimensions 120/70 (front) and 180/55 (rear) are widespread (especially among the once popular 600 super sports bikes), the current superbikes are now rolling on wider 190 / 55 slippers. In accordance with the requirements for original equipment, tire developers also adapt new models to these dimensions. With the current R1, we deliberately selected a typical representative of this guild so that the test statements are as general as possible.
Conclusion
Dry balance after crossing the finish line: newer is not automatically better. Michelin and Dunlop have made their models very sporty. Those who move their motorcycle quickly will also appreciate these advantages. In race mode, Power RS + and Sportsmart MK3 are very good tires, but in an all-round view they are “only” good. The leadership quartet, on the other hand, is very good for everyday use, above all the new, all-round perfectly coordinated S 22 from Bridgestone – a really noticeable improvement on the predecessor models S 20 and S 21. The well-known profiles from Conti, Pirelli and are still doing very well Metzeler: the Sportec M7 RR as a crunchy universal all-rounder, the Diablo Rosso Corsa II as a super sporty rain artist and the Sport Attack 3 as an extremely handy home range weapon.
