Innovations: look into the future
Pretty bad boxer

Whatever the BMW designers took, it worked. Never before has a boxer been so radically styled to attack as in this study called “Concept Roadster”. Naked bike friends will rejoice, traditionalists will shake their heads, and the competition will tremble. BMW can now also do bad boxers.

The Concorso d’Eleganza at the Villa d’Este is actually a very noble event where collectors of valuable automobiles and motorcycles from all over the world meet to celebrate themselves and their precious objects. Last year the motorcycle department of the global corporation used the sophisticated stage to present the memorable boxer study “Concept Ninety” with an air-cooled boxer engine, practically an R 90 S in a modern design.

This year the two-wheelers went one better. They rolled a sensational and above all ultra-modern design study in front of the audience, which even the most daring boxer fan would not have dreamed of. Compliments, the Munich designers would never have been considered so progressive. And one would never have suspected that this huge boxer engine could work in such a light, even filigree-looking motorcycle despite water cooling.

Some elements of the study suggest the upcoming R 1200 R.

“The modernity and the emotionality of the BMW Concept Roadster show that motorcycling for BMW is much more than a perfect function,” explains Edgar Heinrich, Head BMW motorcycle Design the current work. Hear, hear, you can only say, because up to now it has mostly been quite different. BMW motorcycles should work perfectly, sleek styling played second fiddle. You remember, for example, an R 1200 ST or the many well-wired K models. For decades, BMW hid entire areas behind black plastic panels, and the word body was even used in internal design when talking about the plastic casing of the respective machines. Such a short, crisp and pure machine is really good. It stages the unique engine concept with an almost brutal presence. Crouched, as if ready to jump, the 125-hp boxer greedily lurks around corners. Or the traffic light that turns green.

Some elements of the study also point to the coming R 1200 R there. The telescopic fork, for example, and the chassis concept with the two distinctive frame triangles. But the arrangement of the water cooler will also be the same. You can only wish for the beautiful tank seat line for a production motorcycle, as well as the two distinctive air inlets above the radiator hood. The BMW designers have also come up with a “future-oriented” engine spoiler. In addition to optical tasks, this also takes on the function of a front silencer. You could well imagine that for a production motorcycle, this construction makes sense.

Towards authentic, emotionally touching machines

Far from being used in series production, there are of course the many milled parts that make the study appear so unique. A rear frame machined from a whole block of aluminum looks brilliant, but costs a hell of a lot of money. So far, at most, Bimota has dared to do something similar. Again, the plastic crash pads on the valve covers appear very smart and realizable. They should be reminiscent of knee sliders from racing suits. On the other hand, no one would think of series-milling the valve covers from solid, as in the study.

The LED headlights will also remain a dream of the future for a while. It is stylishly hidden behind frosted glass and looks ultra-flat, which gives the whole machine an additional dynamic note. The first spy photos from MOTORRAD already revealed that a relatively normal, oval headlight will be used in series production. But anyway. The fans of the brand will be happy to see how BMW is moving away from plastic and towards metal and authenti-
different, emotionally touching machines. Like with the R nineT, in which the Munich-based company perfectly staged its air-cooled boxer and landed a huge success. The Concept Roadster study shows that in Munich, on the other hand, you are quite able to put an at least as pure and reduced motorcycle with the water-cooled boxer on the wide wheels. One can only hope that as much of the study as possible will finally hit the streets.
