Accessory exhausts for Suzuki GSX-R 1000 (K7 / K8)
Lighter, slimmer, stronger?
MOTORRAD tested 13 accessory exhausts for the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 (K7 / K8) in issue 17/2008.
Holger Hertneck
07/31/2008
Admittedly, tastes are different, but not so different that the voluminous GSX-R rear silencers are not a thorn in the side of the vast majority of motorcyclists. Thus an ideal field for the accessories market, which offers a lot of alternatives. Even Suzuki sells with the Yoshimura GP Evo II a visual treat. Other test participants come from Akrapovic, Arrow, Bos, Gianelli, GPR, KR-Tuned, Laser, Leo Vince, Micron, Mivv, Shark and Termignoni.

The evaluation criteria include workmanship, fit / assembly, weight, top performance and performance. First of all, all participants had to flex their muscles on the MOTORRAD test bench. And lo and behold, with the exception of the Micron pots, with which the Suzuki presses three hp less on the roller, the accessory dampers are at least at series level or found, as in the case of Akrapovic, Bos, Gianelli and Termignoni even up to three additional horsepower. A positive result when you think of the performance losses in previous tests with other motorcycle models.
But not only the top performance characterizes good retrofit dampers, the power delivery and the torque curve also play an important role. And in this, some candidates clearly outbid the series. Bos in particular succeeds in smoothing out some drops in the torque curve and, for example, in making around 10 Nm more available in the 3000 rpm range.
Last but not least, when it comes to possible police checks, the stationary and driving noise values and, for the AUK investigation, the emissions behavior are decisive. MOTORRAD carried out these measurements in close cooperation with the Dekra Technology Center in Klettwitz near Dresden. And the results were even more positive than with the performance measurement.
Particularly praiseworthy: All systems passed the often critical noise measurements without any complaints. Criticism is hailing from a number of candidates for the cheap metal clamp holders. Molded clamps made of carbon or screwed or even welded brackets such as those used by Bos, Micron, Shark and Yoshimura are easier to assemble. In contrast to circumferential clamps, they also do not disturb the appearance of the end pots.

Exhaust gas measurement – a clean affair
In the GSX-R 1000 Are the lambda probe and catalytic converter not in the components affected by the exhaust conversion? It should therefore be possible to rule out a change in exhaust gas behavior due to the installation of retrofit dampers. Nevertheless, MOTORRAD had Dekra test engineers carry out the exhaust emissions test for motorcycles (AUK) with all test dampers. The CO content is determined in percent by volume using a collecting funnel.
Since the Suzuki has two mufflers, the values for right and left are averaged. In the case of the GSX-R, according to the manufacturer, this value must not exceed 0.3 at increased idle speed (2250 / min +/- 250 / min). The Suzuki turned out to be a real clean man, because all dampers with 0.01 to 0.015 were very far below this value. The slight fluctuations in results among the candidates are negligible.
Noise measurement – quiet step
Bilski
Loud: There is a decent noise level on the 20-meter-long measuring section.
On the extensive test site of the Dekra Technology Center in Klettwitz, right next to the Lausitzring, experienced Dekra testers carried out the stationary and driving noise measurements. The values of the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 entered in the papers are 96 dB (A) for the stationary noise and 79 dB (A) for the driving noise. The stationary noise measurement only serves as a reference value for checking during traffic controls by the police. The tolerance limit is up to five dB (A) above the standard value. When measuring the driving noise, the motorcycle drives in second and third gear at 50 km / h (+/- one km / h tolerance) to the 20-meter-long measuring section and accelerates fully. A microphone 7.5 meters away from the center of the measuring section records the noises. Two passages from the right and two from the left are recorded in each aisle. The total of eight measured values are rounded and then a dB (A) tolerance is deducted. The mean value of this gives the effective driving noise value. And none of the retrofit systems are higher than the series system ?? which at 78 dB (A) is even one dB (A) quieter than stated in the papers.
Conclusion
Well, please, it works: a test of retrofit dampers in which no participant exceeds the permitted noise limit values. Not least because of this, the MOTORRAD judgments are gratifyingly positive. But there are hardly any failures in the other test criteria either. Right at the front are the mufflers from Akrapovic and Yoshimura, just behind them the most powerful and at the same time most affordable test system from Bos, which is why it received the “Best Buy” rating. GSX-R-1000 owners don’t have to worry when looking for alternatives to the voluminous stock dampers ?? There are plenty of recommended replacements.
