Radically changed engine mounting position

A motorcycle engine doesn’t always have to be installed in the traditional way – with the crankcase at the bottom. Suzuki has patented an alternative installation position.

The classic installation position for an internal combustion engine in motorcycles sees the cylinder head at the top and the crankcase at the bottom. Suzuki can imagine deviating from that. This is evident from the patent specifications of the motorcycle manufacturer that have now been published by the Japanese Patent Office.

The wheelbase becomes shorter

The pictures in the patent application show that Suzuki clamps the cylinder banks between the main profiles of a bridge frame, the crankshaft rotates just under the driver’s seat and the gearbox moves forward / down. Rotated cylinder heads mean that there is an intake tract at the top and an exhaust system going downwards. The space under the dummy tank is completely added to the intake area, the fuel supply is bunkered under the bench.

But why do the Japanese want to change the traditional installation position of the engine? The patent gives two reasons for this. The repositioning creates more space in front of the engine block, which could be used to significantly shorten the wheelbase and thus improve handling. So that the load does not become overhanded, the patent provides for a significantly extended swing arm to guarantee driving stability.

A second advantage would be the increased ground clearance due to the increased installation position. This creates space for an exhaust system located under the engine.

The changed installation position could be used for single-cylinder or in-line engines (depending on the construction side).
