Georgi wins in Schleiz, team maintains IDM top position

A natural race track with a lot of tradition that has a lot to offer in terms of driving. A route that consists largely of public roads. That is all the Schleizer triangle! From July 28th to 30th, 2017, the International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM) stopped on the Thuringian circuit.

08/02/2017

(Press release) The team Yamaha For the third weekend of the IDM season, Freudenberg came with four drivers who were supposed to start in Yamaha blue at the weekend. As usual, Max Kappler and Jan-Ole Jahnig were the championship leaders of the IDM-Supersport 300 in the Saxon team. In addition to the two, the team in Schleiz sent Tim Georgi into the race as a guest starter. The 17-year-old Berliner made his debut in the new junior class. Fourth in the group was Max Enderlein, who is currently in very good shape and clearly focused on the podium in the IDM Supersport 600.

Training / qualifying

After some of the Friday training sessions still had to be done in the wet, the conditions on Saturday got significantly better and the drivers were able to chase times on the not without danger of Schleiz track. Max Enderlein, who already showed top times on Friday, tied in directly and secured second place on the grid for the two 600 class races.

In the 300cc class, Tim Georgi already let a few eyes widen in the paddock on Friday. In wet conditions, the Berliner drove 5 seconds faster than the competition at times and made it clear that he can be expected (despite a guest start). In the end Jan-Ole Jahnig grabbed the pole, followed by Tim Georgi and Max Kappler in 3rd place. Perfect conditions for the Yamaha Freudenberg team!

After the qualifying, Max Enderlein went straight to the first race of the IDM Supersport 600. Enderlein got off to a good start and was right at the front. In the course of the race he was able to defend second place, increase the distance to the pursuers and take the first podium.

In the second race on Sunday afternoon, the Hohenstein-Ernstthaler got off well again and was also part of the leading group. In the last laps of the second race, the fight between Enderlein and a competitor came to a head. Both opponents wanted to secure second place for themselves. In the end, the fight in the last chicane decided with a better outcome for Enderlein. He positioned himself so cleverly in the last two corners that he could accelerate his opponent to the finish line. A perfect maneuver, which secured the young Saxon another 20 championship points in the end and ended a very good weekend with 40 points overall.

Sunday was reserved for the youngsters of the IDM Supersport 300 to hold two races. Starting from positions 1 to 3 on the grid, the Freudenberg trio was able to integrate directly into the top group of the 12-lap race. Until the final phase, Jahnig, Kappler and Georgi fought with two other competitors and took turns with the management work. At times, all five opponents were only 0.6 seconds apart.

With a few laps to go, the small gap should prove to be a problem. In the Seng, one of the fastest places on the Schleizer Dreieck, Kappler jumped out of gear at 190 km / h. Jan-Ole Jahnig, driving directly behind him, could no longer react adequately to Kappler’s unexpected delay and drove him into the rear. Both pilots fell to the ground and the race management decided to stop the race with the red flag. Both pilots were taken straight to the medical center on the route for treatment and screening. Max Kappler was then transferred to the hospital in Schleiz, where he was examined more closely. Fortunately, he was able to give the all-clear in the evening. However, he remained in the hospital for observation. Due to the termination of the race, the lap in front of the red flag was counted as the finish line, with Kappler in 2nd place, Jahnig 3rd place and Georgi in 4th place.

In contrast to Kappler, Jan-Ole Jahnig got off lightly and was able to tackle the second race. The Jahnig crew had their hands full to get the Yamaha R3 repaired within two hours. But everything should work perfectly. As in the first race, Jahnig and Georgi were able to take the lead again and set the tone in the leading group. In the end, Georgi won his first full IDM Supersport 300 race and underlined that he deserved the wildcard for the Lausitzring in the Supersport 300 World Championship. Jahnig secured valuable points in the championship with third place.

Carsten Freudenberg (Team Principal)

“First I have to say that I am very grateful that we are leaving Schleiz today without any major injuries and I wish Max [Kappler] a speedy recovery on behalf of the team! Many thanks also to the helpers and marshals on site in Schleiz, who did a very good job.

If you ignore the fall, we were once again very successful this weekend with a total of 6 podium places – including one victory.

Max Enderlein absolutely confirmed his form and also showed how well he can read a race in order to prevail in the end! With 40 points he is now in second place in the championship.

But our young and wild ones also presented themselves perfectly. A complete front row in our team colors makes me particularly happy, of course. We set the pace in both races and were always in a position to fight for victory. The fact that Tim can then prevail in the second race and wins, of course, gives us confidence for the wildcard at the Lausitzring in 3 weeks. We will continue next week in Brno before we want to fight for points in the IDM again in Assen in 14 days.”

“Today I was lucky in bad luck. That could have ended very stupidly. I was doing really well, was able to improve significantly compared to the last few days and the duels really made me want more. That was entirely to my liking. The first thing to do now is to find and eliminate the problem. But we can do it – together and as a team. So, don’t blame anyone. Given the circumstances, I’m fine, so don’t worry. In Assen I’m back on my bike!”

“It wasn’t an easy weekend. The first time in the rain went very well and I was able to get used to the new track well. Of course, I was super happy with P1 in qualifying. In the race it was a haywire, a battle group with five drivers formed. In the 8th lap, Max jumped out of 6th gear and I couldn’t avoid it. So we both fell and the race was stopped. I wasn’t that happy with P3. I was lucky that it didn’t hit me as hard as Max and so I was able to drive the second race with pain. There was only a small group, but the fighting was just as tough as the race before. My thanks go to the team and my mechanics, who again did a great job. Especially since they cleaned up the bike really well after my fall in the first race. Thank you!”

“Yes, a new challenge mastered [laughs]! I am absolutely happy with my performance on the Yamaha. Despite the damp conditions, I immediately had a good feeling on Friday. That continued over the whole weekend. Now the Supersport 300 is in a class where you need the slipstream and have to use it, so that I had to rethink something when fighting with the others. But that worked really well in the second race! Thanks to my team, Yamaha and the sponsors for giving me this chance!”

Have a great weekend! I started the weekend well. Was the fastest in the dry training sessions on Friday. On Saturday I was able to secure starting position 2 and lay a good foundation for the races. In the races twice second and 40 points in the championship are the maximum we could get out of this weekend and which makes me very satisfied. Thanks to the crew for a very good job.”
