The name is actually a joke: Sportster! Dedicated rollators have a real chance against the smallest and cheapest Harley. The change from the cast-iron Shovel to the completely new, finally full-throttle-proof Evolution engine made the Sporty suitable for the masses from the end of 1985 and belied all Harley prejudices (oils, doesn’t hold …).
Quantum leap for the 2004 vintage
With the change to the 2004 vintage, the next and so far last quantum leap was pending for the Harley Davidson Sportster 883 – and this is exactly the generation we are talking about here. A previously somewhat phlegmatic and now and then quite annoying vibrator turned into a fun device that practically only transmits good vibrations to the crew.
The secret of success: The Evo engine, which has been heavily redesigned in most of its more than 400 parts, is no longer rigid, but is vibration-decoupled in the frame via silent blocks and push rods. In a completely new and significantly more torsion-resistant frame. On top of that, there were better struts and more powerful brakes. 30 kilos more weight? For free, a Harley Davidson Sportster 883 has never felt better. Sportster new prices were and are political prices to fixate customers. Great for potential second-hand buyers, because that’s how you get your first dose of Harley spirit at a fairly manageable rate. And if you don’t like it, you won’t ruin a lot of money.

The second-hand offer is good, but relatively young specimens of the most popular models (Iron, SuperLow) are not very far from the (relatively cheap) new price.

Low price level. There is practically nothing below five mille, but even below 6000 euros it is difficult to find something really good. Anyone looking for a little longer will come across standard models with a carburetor and relatively high mileage or “individual” conversions.

Medium price level. Anyone who can spend between 7,000 and 8,000 euros has a very large selection, and the popular Iron and SuperLow models are also available. The mileage is usually just under or just a little over 10,000 kilometers.

High price level. In this price range, very young used cars with few kilometers, well-made conversions and demonstrators can be found. If you really want ABS, you also have to look in this price range – and rarely save more than 1000 euros compared to a new machine.

The Sportster 883 is a women’s motorcycle – that’s true?
No more. 70 percent of our 883 customers are now men. The very successful Iron is mainly responsible for this. And even before 2009 we had a “men’s motorcycle” in the Sportster range with the XL 883 R, in a way the Iron predecessor model. Otherwise, by then, it was already true that quite a few women were using the Sportster. Wives of long-time Harley riders are also welcome.
What is the age structure of the buyers??
Significantly younger than our other Harley customers, so definitely from their mid-twenties and thus at least ten or 15 years younger than the “typical” Harley buyer.
Which used 883s are most popular, which are less?
The Iron is clearly ahead and by a long way ahead, followed by the Custom – and then comes the SuperLow. The 883 R is also still quite popular. At the lower end are the older Low and Standard.
How long do 883 buyers keep their machine and why are they selling it again?
With the 883, many are testing the Harley theme, have become sure about it, but usually find after the second season that it could now be a little faster. Then they drive the 1200s or, especially the slightly larger ones, a Street Bob or even a Softail test – and then they say to themselves: “I need that now!” However, some of them stay with the more manageable Sportster, only as the 1200s, in Recently also in the form of the touring equipped 1200 T. Iron owners keep their machine because they think the look is great, but upgrade to 1200 cubic meters.
Is the conversion worthwhile at all?
That is definitely worth it. An 883 Iron currently costs around 2200 euros less than a 1200 Forty-Eight. If you can upgrade your dealer with a 1200 kit, working hours, registration and all the trimmings, you pay less – depending on the dealer’s hourly rate, around 2000 euros or even less. So if you are basically very satisfied with your 883 and just want more performance, you should not sell it, but upgrade it. In addition, the 883 has a slightly shorter gear ratio than the 1200 and therefore works even better with the 1200 kit in case of doubt.
