Nothing below, something in the middle and everything above. Somehow the super sporty set-up of the R1 engine didn’t really fit. Not the only, but always the biggest point of criticism of the 2006 introduced Yamaha FZ1 and her half-wrapped sister Yamaha FZ1 Fazer. Super sports car engines in radical naked bikes were actually booming: Triumph Speed Triple, Kawasaki Z 1000, Aprilia Tuono and Co. sold splendidly. Yamaha, however, failed due to a torque-focused design of the 150 hp domesticated in-line four from the 2005 R1. In addition, there was an overly long gearbox and a rough and delayed throttle response, at least in the first model year. Over the years, many owners have therefore invested in a smaller chain sprocket for better traction or a Power Commander for a more pleasant and more direct throttle response.

Pay attention to extras when visiting
Nevertheless, a hard-working gearshift foot is required for brisk progress – and no fear of high revs. Because only beyond the 7,000 revolutions does the tension Yamaha FZ1 to their muscles – but then properly! Whether this is interpreted as a lack of torque or simply as a radical performance characteristic remains a matter of opinion. Friends of radical interpretations will enjoy it. Especially since the Nippon athlete hardly knows any other weaknesses. Even the often criticized because the lack of handiness is largely due to the initial tires.

In their simple but clear cockpit, the FZ1 and Fazer hardly reveal more than the most necessary information.
But used buyers no longer have to worry about that. With newer rubbers, the Yamaha FZ1 zags greedily in an inclined position. When visiting, you should attach importance to extras that range from useful steering dampers to suitcase sets and windshields to retrofits that are more optically or sonically justified, such as mini indicators, license plate holders and retrofit mufflers. If you are interested in the FZ1, but still fluctuates between naked and half-shell: Both are suitable for pillion, the more comfortable fork, better wind protection, higher light output and the main stand speak for the Yamaha FZ1 Fazer.

Dealer interview
Thomas Bayer (60), co-owner of the Stocksiefen motorcycle company in Nauheim, Hesse. There he has been taking care of purchasing and sales for 25 years and advising customers on all Yamaha models, new and used.
MOTORCYCLE: A customer stands in the shop and has the choice between naked and fazer. What does he choose??
Thomas Bayer: He’s probably taking the naked Yamaha FZ1. Visually, it is simply more popular with customers at the moment. But the Yamaha FZ1 Fazer is also quite popular, especially for pillion rides it is better suited with the larger seat cushion.
MOTORCYCLE: The engine comes from the R1 super sports car and also likes high speeds in the Yamaha FZ1. Its reliability suffers as a result?
Thomas Bayer: No not at all. If you don’t willfully drive the machine without oil, you can practically not destroy this engine. Six-digit mileage is no problem at all. If the machine has been serviced regularly, you can still buy it with 100,000 kilometers on the clock.

The somewhat clumsy-looking original muffler was often replaced by a sports exhaust despite its pithy sound.
MOTORCYCLE: So what should you pay attention to instead when visiting? As is so often the case, on a neatly stamped checkbook?
Thomas Bayer: Well, with ten or twelve year old bikes you shouldn’t necessarily insist on it. The condition of the wearing parts is more important: brakes, fluids, tires. If the mileage exceeds 50,000 kilometers, the steering head bearing and valve clearance should also have been checked. We have never had any problems, but it is still reassuring for the head to know that everything is fine.
MOTORCYCLE: The Yamaha FZ1 has an ingenious brake, we recommend the models with ABS anyway?
Thomas Bayer: Of course, ABS is never a bad thing, but it is not mandatory either. If an ABS is installed, you should definitely test it during the inspection. Braking from 30 km / h with the rear brake is sufficient. The background to this is that the ABS could have been damaged if the brake fluid of one of the previous owners was not changed for too long.
MOTORCYCLE: What role do the weaknesses criticized by the MOTORRAD testers play?
Thomas Bayer: The throttle response was made a little smoother with a revised control unit in 2010, but the Yamaha FZ1 is also suitable for everyday use. For me personally, a homogeneous power development is more important than the big punch in the lower speed range. And that’s where the FZ1 does a good job.
MOTORCYCLE: In conclusion: how much should you spend??
Thomas Bayer: Models in good condition can be found from 4,500 euros. You don’t have to pay more than 6,000.
