The engine is likely to act a little more powerfully despite its impressive 106 hp, and there has been hardly any criticism of the chassis since the 2013 model update.

Designed for durability

The Yamaha FZ8 and Fazer 8 appeal with their smooth-running engine, solid workmanship and powerful brakes – as a naked bike for rational purists or with a half-shell for price-conscious sports tourists.

For a long time, inexpensive all-rounders were more likely to be found in the 600 class, bestsellers such as the Honda CBF 600 or the Suzuki Bandit. And also Yamaha’s FZ6 / Fazer, sold 18,000 times in this country. But for almost ten years at the latest, models such as the BMW F 800 R, Kawasaki Z 750 and Triumph Street Triple have come to the fore in a “new” middle class, which aroused more enthusiasm as all-rounders due to more displacement, more torque and better driving dynamics. Not too sporty, but still very fun. Yamaha traded and launched the new 800 series in June 2010 as the successor to the FZ6 bestseller. 106 HP, a good 220 kilos, fresh design, based on the big sister and HP bombs FZ1 / Fazer (150 HP), that is how they wanted to show off.

A too soft chassis and a torque hanger at 5000 rpm prevented top places in comparison tests. Everyday qualities, a finely regulating (optional) ABS, low fuel consumption – all of this was perceived positively, but for sporty drivers, the 800 series was a bit of a backseat. For the 2013 model year, the Yamaha FZ8 and the more touristy but much less popular sister, the Yamaha Fazer8, started again with a revised chassis. Finally no longer mercilessly underdamped, the machine could now be driven with fun over more bumpy slopes. However, a year later, the cooler, stronger and cheaper three-cylinder cracker MT-09 from the same company made competition. As a new vehicle now somewhat in the shade, the 800 series is an excellent prey for used four-cylinder bargain hunters.

sightseeing

Proven technology, a conventional four-valve inline quad – the Yamaha FZ8 / Fazer 8 is conceptually designed for durability. In any case, workshops cannot detect any abnormalities even after several years of experience with these models with regular maintenance (attention: major inspection at 40,000 kilometers, costs from approx. 500 euros). Owners of the machine, especially the bare FZ8, like to take individualization measures with so much inconspicuousness. Retrofit silencers are very popular. More elegant parts than the original tube are therefore very popular as an encore when buying a used tube. Caution: check approval! Bestsellers such as a Leovince Factory R exhaust quickly cost 600 euros and should be taken into account when negotiating prices. Practical accessories such as main stands or tank bags as well as decorative parts such as mini indicators or radiator covers, on the other hand, hardly matter in terms of price.

Market situation

Apparently the Yamaha FZ8 and Fazer8 could never really ignite on the German market. Compared to the successful 600-series predecessor, the 800-series machine could often only be bought at many dealers with a significant price reduction. Partly as a previous or previous year model for over 2000 euros below the list price. This makes used offers over 6000 euros difficult cases. Especially since good second-hand copies of the more potent FZ1 / Fazer are already being offered for sale in this price range. Due to the wide range from dealers who offer warranty, private sellers can usually only sell their second-hand machines to men and women at dumping prices. However, the motorcycle is not considered a grandfather clock. The naked FZ8 is perceived as an interesting option by younger, price-conscious buyers, if optical improvements have already been made (e.g. high-quality sports exhaust, new license plate holder, LED mini indicators). The Fazer8 is not that popular, but also finds grateful buyers if it is already equipped with suitcases and useful travel accessories.
