New chance

It was only with the debut of the YZF-R1 that the travel faction became aware of the qualities of the Yamaha Thunderace as a sovereign sports tourer. However, the prices for the ex-athlete are still high.

When the Yamaha YZF 1000 R In 1996, when it started to fight for the blue ribbon of the best big bike with the competition, the touring aspects of this well-engineered construction were of course hardly illuminated. Hardly any tester took notice of the extraordinary elasticity of the engine, the comfortably firm chassis and the relatively civilian seating position in the course of the super sports criteria.
Today, under the impression of the lighter, more radical, but also much more nervous R1 presented in 1998, the assessment of the Thunderace and its intended use has changed. You no longer have to mimic the ultimate athlete? and the YZF 1000 R presents itself as an excellent, dignified all-rounder. Regardless of whether you are touring with luggage and a passenger or you are on your own in search of the fastest corner, the 1000 series can easily handle both.
The Thunderace, born in 2000, inspected by MOTORRAD, has completed 5000 kilometers as a demonstration copy at the Motorcorner company in Wangen and is outwardly in virtually new condition. Freshly fitted Michelin pilot tires and owner Stefan Wahl’s insurance that the machine has been dethrottled, which means almost 145 hp, urge caution. Cost of the explosive offer: 16,500 marks.
The silky smooth running of the four-cylinder engine, which is based on the FZR 1000 engine, is always inspiring. From around 2000 rpm, the five-valve engine responds extremely fine when accelerating. With so much power, the sensitive reaction of the front double disc brake system to the slightest pull on the hand lever is reassuring.
Compared to its predecessor, the FZR 1000, Yamaha again used a conventional telescopic fork instead of the previously used upside-down version for the Thunderace. Not a bad choice. Despite the respectable dimensions of 48 millimeters standpipe diameter, the fork responds sensitively and does not appear insensitive when the damping is tight. Although some Thunderace drivers perceive the five-speed gearbox as a bit wobbly and complain about the search for neutral if the clutch is not optimally set, the gears of the model that is being driven do not engage as smoothly as butter, but they engage precisely.
The engine’s acceleration and pulling power cannot be explored on the country road without risking the Flensburg points account. The abundance of performance makes overtaking maneuvers an adrenaline-fueled comedy. However, the YZF 1000 R only becomes a frequently cited sports tourer with acceptable travel qualities if the seating position is right. Many Thunderace owners achieve this by installing LSL-Match handlebar halves that are a good four centimeters higher (cost: around 650 marks plus working hours). They also donate a touring windshield from MRA (around 150 marks) to their base in order to minimize the wind pressure on their upper body. The following applies to driving in pairs: the escort should not exceed a size of around 1.70 meters.
Officially, the Thunderace is only offered with 98 hp. The dethrottling to 145 hp at the Yamaha dealer includes four new nozzle needles, the removal of the throttle slide stops, a smaller rear sprocket and a separation of the green-white and white cables from the ignition box. Material costs (sprocket and nozzle needles): around 290 marks. With the required working time (around three hours) and the entry, the whole fun comes to around 700 marks. So if you are looking for a used Thunderace, you should look for the right version right away in order to save the cost of retrofitting.
There were two modifications to the high-torque, low-vibration engine. From model year 1997, the shell of the third crankshaft sliding bearing received two additional oil holes, after which the GTS 1000 engine (50,000-kilometer long-distance test in MOTORRAD 20/1994) had problems with the crankshaft main bearings. In addition, some engines attracted attention in the first two years of production with increased oil consumption (with a sporty driving style more than 0.5 liters per 1000 kilometers) with mileages between 20,000 and 40,000 kilometers. As a result, Yamaha modified the pistons from chassis number 4VD-010219 and also recommended installing the piston rings of the GTS 1000 for repairs.
only maintenance measures are required if an acoustic snarling comes from the area of the Exup roller at the driver’s ear. Correct play of the cables from the throttle to the rollers or, in the case of a coarse rattling, treatment of the roller with Daimler hot lubricant paste on the bearings, and peace reigns in the collector.
Whether the Thunderace can take its second chance as a versatile sports tourer depends on the success of the big Fazer with the R1 engine presented at this year’s Intermot. Only when the response to the new, undisguised Allrounder 2001 becomes apparent, the used prices should start to move in such a way that even bargain hunters will become aware of the YZF 1000 R..

The Yamaha YZF 1000 R, offered on the German market since the end of 1995, has now been sold around 3500 times. Since the YZF-R1’s debut in 1998, sales have fallen sharply, so it made a logical move from the heavyweight super sports car to the more tailor-made subject of the sporty tourer. The Schwacke list noted: year of construction 1996 (39,900 kilometers) 9800 marks; 1997 (31,500 kilometers) 10,600 marks; 1998 (23,100 kilometers) 11,900 marks; 1999 (14,700 kilometers) 14,400 marks. The competition is fierce in this displacement class: Honda’s Fireblade and Kawasaki’s Ninja ZX-9R in the four-cylinder, Ducati, again Honda with the VTR 1000 and Suzuki’s TL 1000 S with its powerful V2 engines. And another interesting alternative is the three-cylinder Triumph Daytona T 595 (the almost identical predecessor of the 955 i).

For me (1.90 meters) the seating position of the Thunderace turned out to be comfortable. The chassis shows no weaknesses even when fully loaded and offers high reserves with the wide adjustment range. The clutch disengages poorly when it is cold. The transmission, ideally geared for the country road, could, however, have a sixth gear to reduce engine speed on the motorway. Now I have exchanged the Thunderace with almost 60,000 kilometers for a new one. The oil consumption was in the normal range of about 0.2 liters per 1000 kilometers. Klaus Kellner, Birkenau 1998 I fell in love with the Ace, with which everything from touring to sporty cornering is possible. With a mileage of 20,000, the oil consumption rose to 0.5 liters at high engine speeds. Then Yamaha replaced the pistons and rings with a modified version including valve stem seals. With this measure, the oil consumption was reduced to almost zero. Kai Wagner, WaiblingenMeine Thunderace is now 45,000 kilometers down, so far there have been no problems. With a passenger size of not more than 1.65 meters, it is also easy to travel with a tank bag and luggage bags. For me, the absolute 1000, with which you can quickly tour solo or with your girlfriend on vacation without any problems: Werner, Jahke, Mackenrodt
