Beta engine: perfectly matched with chassis technology from ZF

Betamotor has been in the motorcycle business for over a hundred years now. Enduros for hobby and competition are the focus of the third oldest manufacturing brand in the industry. For the 2020 model year, Beta is once again equipping its motorcycles with ZF technology.

04/01/2020

The Italian manufacturer has been making motorcycles and scooters for 115 years. The traditional brand has long since grown into one of the big players in the highly competitive off-road sector. Trials and enduro sports are right at the top of the agenda at Betamotor. This is also shown by the model range for the current year: The My 2020 series is new here, which for the first time is not a further development of the previous model, but a completely new enduro generation. beta interprets the off-road motorcycle with a slim, weight-reduced, easy-to-ride, safe and reliable bike – and the result is impressive. The suspension systems from ZF are included.

Beta has given the Evo My 2020 a complete facelift, which gives it an even more appealing look. Also included: the fork from ZF.

The new enduro generation RR My 2020 consists of eight different engines: four 2-stroke (125/200/250/300 ccm) and four 4-stroke (350/390/430/480 ccm), which correspond to the beta Offer customers the opportunity to choose the perfect companion for their adventures from an extremely wide range of models. The racing family of the Enduro product line bears the name “RR Racing My 2020” and consists of seven different models: 125, 250, 300 ccm 2T and 350, 390, 430, 480 ccm 4T.

The new Evo My 2020 trial model range is available in the 2-stroke version with four engine variants: 125, 250, 300 and 300 SS, with “SS” for “Super smooth” stands, a rather meek bike compared to the standard version. The 4-stroke model is available in the familiar 300 cc version, which skilfully combines performance and user-friendliness.

Better damped with ZF in Beta RR My 2020

In the new generation RR My 2020 for the standard enduro bikes, ZF cannot be missing: “ZF delivers both Front and rear wheel damping for the regular enduros in all eight engines”, explains Markus Seitz, Head of Development Motorcycle at ZF. In contrast to the previous model, the interior of the fork has been completely revised. “It now has increased shock absorption in hard impacts and improved control of the motorcycle’s pitching movements.”

ZF supplies both front and rear wheel damping for the enduro two-stroke models RR My 2020 in engines with 125 and 200 cc displacement.

Beta’s RR My 2020 product line uses a ZF fork with an open cartridge design. In this solution, the damper is supplied with the oil from the surrounding oil bath, which also dissipates the heat. “The big advantage of the open cartridge forks is that, unlike the closed cartridge, they can be serviced by the driver. This is due to the simpler construction, whereas with the closed-cartdiges mostly special tools are needed to open the cartridges”, says Seitz. All ZF telescopic forks for the Beta series work with around 300 mm of spring travel, as well as with hydraulic shock absorption for the compression stage, which is easy on the driver and material in tough use. “This feature helps with the vehicle dynamics coordination, especially in the compression direction”, explains Markus Seitz.

Beta Evo My 2020 with new fork set-up: ZF shouldn’t be missing in the trial area either – the hydraulics are configured even more progressively in the new model year.

For the trial model range Evo My 2020, ZF is also waiting for a new fork set-up at Beta. In the new model year the hydraulics are configured even more progressively and the installation of the pressure stage adjuster is already installed as standard in the factory models of the trails.

All Beta Enduro and Trials with ZF shock absorbers

The ZF shock absorber used here is also updated in the enduro series RR and RR Racing as well as in the Evo My 2020 trials. Here the new stabilization system ensures optimized grip and ground contact when braking hard. In addition, the rear shock absorber also contains a new buffer with a larger progression. This improves the shock absorption and thus guarantees a good protective effect at the end of the spring travel. The shock absorber offers adjustment options tailored to the frame.

The damping on the ZF struts is – like the fork – suitable for ambitious amateur use and can be adjusted with simple tools. In any case, Beta is very sensitive when it comes to the basic set-up of the ZF-equipped models: Although the weight differences between the displacement classes 125/250/300/390/430/480 ccm are actually negligible at less than three kilograms, each model comes with one Own combination of spring-damper coordination to the owner.

As usual, on special assignments, for example on long sand courses, the driver can adjust the front spring by turning the adjusting wheel so that the chassis helps him to drive with more load and traction on the rear wheel. Beta also offers the right special springs from the ZF range. Their use is always necessary when the basic set-up reaches its limits – for example, when the driver’s weight or load is more than 100 kilograms or when the dynamic load changes (such as when jumping) require it.

Distinct sensitivity of the suspension work

For the rear suspension struts, the ZF basic equipment has a separate expansion tank with nitrogen gas, the pressure filling of which can also effectively prevent the damper oil from foaming. What the beta struts also have in common is the two-stage damping control for high and low speeds of the spring movement in the direction of pressure.

When it comes to off-road use, the limit is always set by the oil temperature in the damper. “If the damper gets too hot, the seals will eventually be damaged and the damping performance will decrease due to the lower oil viscosity”, explains the ZF motorcycle expert. “With our system we exhaust the possibilities for extremely good cooling of the oil filling.”

Beta machines that are intended for competition use, among other things, drive from one championship title to the next with chassis from ZF. What has proven itself in the competition flows into the series coordination. And the hobby driver can be sure that if ZF’s highly developed technology has proven itself in racing, the next generation will also be using it in sports machines on the road.
