After a major fire, the entire pit lane of the MotoGP Autodromo Termas de Rio Hondo circuit in Argentina seems to have been lost. The further consequences cannot yet be foreseen.

On Saturday night, a major fire broke out in the pit area on the Autodromo Termas de Rio Hondo MotoGP track in Argentina for reasons that have not yet been clarified.

According to initial reports, the fire destroyed the entire three-storey pit facility as well as the press rooms, the race control rooms and the VIP lounges. The fire is said to have broken out in the area of ​​the terraces. People were not harmed. The museum as well as the control tower, some offices and a small clinic on the track were only slightly damaged in the fire.

The Autodromo Termas de Rio Hondo racetrack was opened in 2007 in the province of Santiago del Estero; in its current form, it was only put into operation nine years ago. Since 2014, MotoGP has been a guest on the North Argentinian circuit. In 2020, however, the MotoGP race had to be canceled due to the corona. In the original Dorna racing calendar for 2021 Argentina was initially planned for mid-April, but then postponed indefinitely.

Autodromo Termas de Rio Hondo

The current contract between the racetrack and Dorna only runs this year. The route operator explained that you are insured against the enormous fire damage. It is financially secure, only the reconstruction will take a very long time. The necessary work should start as soon as possible. They will try everything to be able to host the planned MotoGP race in Argentina in 2021.

The sporting future for the Autodromo Termas de Rio Hondo looks pretty bleak at the moment.
