BMW F 650 GS: The single-cylinder engine has at least 50 hp. Well-maintained specimens from the last model years 2007/2008 still cost a good 4,000 euros.

Compared to the more expensive 800 sister, the twin installed in the F 650 GS and F 700 GS looks significantly more delicate and lower.
Ideal if you want to stay down to earth.

In contrast to the road F 800 R, a tubular steel frame surrounds the compact twin. With a narrow waist, it ensures a good footing on the floor.

Some cheap offers attract even less than 4000 euros. However, these are often specimens with a mileage of more than 50,000 kilometers from private providers who have already changed hands several times and which are technically in part in questionable condition. Proven well-maintained (in the workshop) second or third-hand 650 series machines with less than 40,000 kilometers are only available from 5500 euros, the majority is traded for 6500 euros. The slightly more powerful 700 is less of a “girl’s motorcycle” and is also sought after by advanced riders.

Second-hand advice BMW F 650 and F 700 GS
“F.” for “Novice drivers”?

“GS” stands for terrain / road, we now know that. and “F.” for “Novice drivers”? Certainly not, but the good-natured two-cylinder machine with a hidden 800 cubic capacity is indeed very attractive to beginners.

For the 2016 model year there is the BMW F 700 GS with five (!) Seat heights. From 765 to 860 millimeters, there should be something for everyone and every traveling lady. Four seat variants and lowering of the chassis make it possible. “Factory-fitted optional equipment” is the term used to describe a surcharge on the very low base price. That was already the case with the first edition of the two-cylinder road enduro BMW F 650 GS in 2008. Purchase price: only 7800 euros. But without ABS, main stand and other equipment. With one was quickly over 9000 euros. Back then, too, there was a lowering kit and a flatter accessory bench to lower the seat height from the standard 820 millimeters to 790. People – or rather women – liked to use this option. In particular, slightly insecure beginners feel comfortable on the slim, only slightly over 200 kilo motorcycle, because it is wonderfully easy to control on the first test ride. This all-round device is convincing.

Understatement, not just in terms of price, was the general name of the concept. The displacement was also deliberately understated: the real 798 cubic centimeters of displacement were initially hidden behind the model designation “650”; from the 2013 update model, the machine was called the BMW F 700 GS. Beginners are never overwhelmed with the performance of 71 or 75 PS (with the 700), and simple equipment and sometimes careless processing are countered with very high reliability and great driving performance. Thus, the BMW F 650 and BMW F 700 GS are considered good used deals, especially since any accessories are usually included.

Facelift and details

2008: The new F 650 GS model with a two-cylinder engine is being offered parallel to the single-cylinder model of the same name and at the same time as the new F 800 GS, which has the same but slightly more powerful engine. The parallel twin with 798 cm³ displacement in the F 650 GS only develops 71 instead of 85 hp, but the total weight is about 10 kg less than that of the 800. Other striking differences: simple telescopic fork instead of upside-down fork, cast instead of wire-spoke wheels. Price: 7800 euros. Surcharge: ABS (710 euros), heated grips (195 euros), on-board computer (145 euros), main stand (110 euros).

2010: Special model “30 Years GS” with three-color decoration, hand protectors, engine protection, higher windshield, red seat. Price: 8440 euros.

2011: Special model with front fender and windshield like BMW F 800 GS. Price: 8335 euros.

2013: New model name: F 700 GS. Power now 75 HP, ABS as standard, double disc brake at the front, trim parts, windshield and fittings new, adjustment of the spring base at the rear using an improved handwheel. New special equipment: automatic stability control (ASC) and electronic chassis adjustment (ESA). Price: 8750 euros.

2016: Model variant “Style 1” with red frame, hand protectors and top spoiler. Price: 9100 euros.

Inspection and market situation

According to the manufacturer, the “beginner-friendly all-round travel enduro” is designed somewhat more for road use than the F 800 GS. This has a positive effect on durability, because the F 650/700 GS is usually spared strenuous off-road journeys. Workshops rate the two-cylinder BMW as problem-free. But you should pay attention to the steering head bearing. Depending on the driving style and the load, this can be down after 10,000 kilometers. If the motorcycle has already passed through several (entry-level) hands, worn chain sets, tires and brake pads as well as scratches and unsightly paintwork are not uncommon. Case sets and the lowering kit from the original accessories are considered to add value (conversion costs approx. 1200 euros). The kit with modified fork and new shock absorber does not allow a main stand due to the design. If one can be discovered despite the lowering, it is a foreign kit that usually does not work so well.

Market situation

The demand for both the BMW F 650 and the BMW F 700 GS is high. There is an above-average number of beginners and those returning to work among those interested. Some cheap offers attract even less than 4000 euros. However, these are often specimens with a mileage of more than 50,000 kilometers from private providers who have already changed hands several times and which are technically in partly questionable condition. It’s rare, but still check: Is ABS on board or was this extra, which is subject to a surcharge, originally waived? Verifiably well maintained (in the workshop) second or third hand 650 series machines with less than 40,000 kilometers are only available from 5500 euros, the majority is traded for 6500 euros. The slightly stronger 700 is less of a “girl’s motorcycle” and is also sought after by advanced riders. Their purchase price as new used vehicles with less than 10,000 kilometers is rarely less than 7,500 euros.
