Sports Hiking

BMW’s reputation in the field of sports tourism owes a lot to its R 100 RS from 1976. With this model, the Bavarian manufacturer innovated in many ways, thanks in particular to a fairing developed in a wind tunnel and careful ergonomics. 17 years later, the propeller firm offered another fast road flagship with a flat twin engine. The brand new boxer unit then energizes the R 1100 RS and its revolutionary cycle part: Telelever front axle (separate damping and guidance functions) and acatene transmission integrated into the Paralever. The rider is neat with adjustable handlebars, saddle height and nose screen. To extend the line appears, in 2007, the R1200ST. Despite excellent road qualities, the model suffered from a questionable aesthetic. It paid especially for a delicate positioning, too close in volume to an RT, but also too far from a more sporty R1100S.

With the advent of the liquid-cooled twin, BMW is returning to the sports travel niche. 340 km of varied roads will give us full latitude to judge. Based on the R 1200 R roadster, the new R 1200 RS admits otherwise dimensioned road claims. And a good dose of sportiness…

Discovery

An aptitude that would be judged at first glance, as the lines of the novelty give pride of place to dynamism. Volumes collected on the front, reduced rear set, the Teutonne is unlike anything known from the German manufacturer, mixing genres. In order to claim the title of "Reisen Sport", the R 1200 RS does not skimp on style, with a front end directly inspired by the brand’s hypersport, the S 1000 RR! Angular, the fork crown incorporating the asymmetrical headlight reflectors can optionally receive a central diode blade serving as daytime running light. Fairly wide, this surface is fitted laterally with an additional deflector. They are added, in the lower part, to architectural scoops, double multilayer elements, deflecting air flows. Above, an adjustable screen in two positions (4 with tools) and 40 mm, completes this minimally invasive, but complex fairing.

The taut lines then stretch over a faceted 18-liter tank, specific to the RS. A two-element saddle rests on it, resting on an aerial rear loop, now removable, in tubular steel trellis, barely dressed. Large passenger grab handles in cast aluminum frame this stern, concluded by a LED light.

To power its machine, BMW is of course using the latest evolution of its 1,170 cm3 flat twin, integrated as a load-bearing element within the new steel tube frame. Double camshaft, four valves per cylinder and super square stroke bore ratio (101 mm x 73 mm). The partially cooled air / water unit develops 92 kW (125 hp) at 7,750 rpm and reached his maximum torque of 12.5 da.Nm at 6500 revolutions / min (free version). Note that more than 10 da.Nm are available over the entire useful speed range. In order to give it even more character, the secondary transmission ratio is shorter than on an RT (but longer than on the GS), boosting the evolutions..

German mechanics are, of course, under electronic control with, first of all, two engine maps. In "Road" mode, the piloting aids are adjusted to deliver the most versatile engine response between performance / comfort. The "Rain" mode further smooths the arrival of gas. Via the options drawer, Piloting Pro "offers two additional modes" Dynamic "and" User ". The first allows the RS to express itself fully under acceleration and reduces the intervention of the DTC. This option also influences the Traction control dynamic DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) which then replaces the anti-slip ASC. The second allows you to customize the implementation of each electronic parameter. Finally, new sensors, with angle detection, further refine this It should also be remembered that the block housing now incorporates the six-speed gearbox and the wet clutch, even equipped with an anti-dribble., the shifter pro option will allow you to up AND down gears without disengaging. What will easily accommodate the acatene transmission housed in the aluminum mono-swingarm.
As on the roadster, the cycle part is revolutionized, with the abandonment of the Telelever in favor of a 45 mm inverted fork guiding the steering gear. However, it differs from it with an offset front wheel axle, resulting in a longer caster (114.8 mm). Coupled with a column angle of 27.7 °, BMW announces stability and preserved agility.

The weight distribution is 51 at the front and 49 at the rear. At this level, a mono-shock absorber adjusts for preload and relaxation. From Sachs, we can, as an option, prefer the semi-active dynamic ESA suspension. The sleeves will then adopt a specific gold anodized color.. Three laws of hydraulics and four of prestressing (pilot alone, pilot and baggage, duo, duo baggage) make up the basic setting that new systems are further refining. A travel sensor at the front and a second at the rear make it possible to capture the vertical movements of the wheel guide. Here too, the tilt detection allows damping to be adapted even more precisely to the conditions identified, depending on the driving condition and the pilot’s maneuvers. The controlled damping is also modulated according to the selected control modes, because at BMW, the engine behavior directs the other elements..

BMW R1200RS rear view

To reduce the ardor of the sport road, dfour piston calipers with radial mounting attack 320 mm discs at the front. The rear clamp, double pistons, grips a 276 mm element. All under the thumb of a Bosch ABS (standard) partially coupled. Enough to stop the rotation of the molded rims with 10 thin branches, fitted with excellent Metzeler Roadtech Z8 Interact.

Thus equipped, the Teutonic sport road vehicle also sports a first-rate finish. There are a few differences between the two colors available: the dark version is fitted with an engine spoiler, a stainless steel tank cover, a gray tinted frame and gold anodized calipers. The clear model is dressed in a black frame and disc clamps and a painted tank cover. The shoe is also an option…

Exhaust BMW R1200RS

We blame him for a luggage rack with unattractive tubes, far from the integration of the GS or RT system…. Also, the pentagonal silencer lacks a bit of finesse and the absence of a standard center stand is regrettable..

In the saddle

As standard, the seat rises to 820 mm from the ground and the thin crotch gives appreciable ease. However, two options ex works give the choice between 840 or 790 mm. As an accessory, an extra-low 760 mm saddle will satisfy the little ones. But everyone can deplore the absence of adjustment on this element. Common with the R 1200 R, the rear loop here supports a larger passenger space. The flexion of the crew’s legs is reasonable, supported by aluminum footrests covered with rubber. The pilot plates are slightly set back. The latter barely tilts forward on forged aluminum half-handlebars, reminding that sport is part of the design of the machine. Without excess of course.

Under the eyes, the riser plate has a less attractive balling than the upper tee that it overhangs. Around the fork, the then sheathed flares out, allowing a massive aluminum support for the front fairing to pass through. This elegant element receives the attachments of the screen and stretches to accommodate the instruments. A large tachometer stands alongside a large, very complete monochrome screen. Total and daily mileage, two partial, remaining range, outside temperature and that of the engine, consumption and average speed, clock, oil level. Optional tire inflation pressure control. The display can vary according to three ergonomics: in full mode (Style 0), the information can be arranged individually in the two display areas. Sport mode (Style 1) shows engine speed as a bar graph. The plan is displayed in digital form. Finally, a more refined touring mode (Style 2) picks up speed in digital form and only the two lower areas of the screen are available. Everything is controlled via the pushbuttons on the left stalk. The dial only controls the GPS.

Speedometer BMW R1200RS

We will appreciate the‘Keyless Ride option (300 €), allowing you to keep the key in your pocket. Pressing the central switch then activates the electronics., unlock or lock the neiman…. BUT also the fuel tank hatch ! Very convenient…. as long as the battery is functioning. More classic, but essential, the levers are adjustable in spacing.

BMW R1200RS keyless ignition

In the city

The R 1200 RS sounds pleasant, letting its flat twin heat up with a muffled tremolo. Practical, the tachometer darkens the graduations beyond 5,000 revolutions, indicating the speed not to be exceeded until the ideal engine temperature is reached.

BMW R1200RS Commodos

The first slap and the sport GT sets off with smoothness and balance, denying its 236 kg ready to cut the road. Quite raised, the half-hangers give good ease in traffic. Less flexible than its predecessors, the liquid twin retains sufficient smoothness for urban exercise, well served by a precise box. The shifter works the same, giving a slight boost on downshifting to synchronize the moving assembly. When climbing, avoid using it on the first three gears, the system generating a sharp jerk.

Although rather long, the machine benefits from a good turning radius, allowing quick U-turns and easy maneuvers. The excellent weight distribution allows you to twirl between queues and small spaces. Alert, the mechanics only ask to speak on the boulevards, quickly leading the crew. If the city seems to suit it, the RS will undoubtedly prefer wider horizons..

Motorway and expressways

Dynamic mode engaged, the Bavarian attacks without dragging the top of the tachometer, quickly reaching prohibited speeds. The protection of the screen, in the high position, is effective up to 160 km / h for my eighty-four meter. And this windshield, indented at its top, does not generate any eddies. Beyond that, we will bend the spine to relieve the top of the helmet and the shoulders. Whatever the look, the legs remain perfectly sheltered by the studied volumes of the fairing. Just like the hands. Heading is impeccable, at least on our machines without suitcases. The same goes for comfort, both in terms of ergonomics and seating. A point disputed by some colleagues. For my part, I consider the sport-comfort compromise to be very correct..

Legally, the regime stabilizes at 4,300 revolutions, leaving the twin ready to restart its race without downtime or unpleasant vibrations. The cruise control option then allows you to protect your license and relieve your right wrist. Pressing allows you to increase or decrease the average and the clutch or brake lever grip stops the system. To stop the boredom, we’ll take the exit.

Departmental

Efficient on expressways, the R 1200 RS is even more effective on the secondary network. Combining strength and power, the German bloc energizes escapades. Devoid of inertia, the flat releases the watts in a cheerful rumble. Even if the bridge makes the twin a little pale at the highest revs, from 4000 to 7000 revs it tows vigorously. And you then whip your mount on the shifter, to better understand its sporting potential. The Road mode rounds off the angles of the Germanic character a little, but in no way affects the jovial behavior of the machine. Its contained template gives it a wide range of use. The set allows you to roll up quickly or more sportily with the same pleasure and the same ease. Devoid of parasitic reactions, the gimbal accepts without flinching virile downshifts and wheeling, which the machine is not stingy. Especially if we cut the electronic crutches.

Especially since precision and rigor are linked to this effective dynamic. Rigid and neutral, the BMW follows the imposed trajectories to the millimeter. Although (unfortunately) without telelever, the front axle works flawlessly, giving good feedback. The liveliness is also remarkable, making the fast road dance in the tight ferrule. The RS is taken intuitively, by sight, from one edge to the other, from one curve to the next. And we come out of it briskly, under the joint surveillance of the ASC and the DTC. Especially since the grip of Metzeler does not restrict the angle taken and offers an excellent "road feel".

Nevertheless, purists will regret the triangulated train son uneven asphalt or other corner braking…. The machine loses a little in neutrality. We then pay for this new liveliness. What to revive the debate on this subject (?)

BMW R1200RS on the road

It must still be recognized that the fork (ESA) efficiently manages mass transfers, limiting diving. Perfectly suspended, the R 1200 RS adapts, in one click, to road conditions and to the wishes of the crew. The controlled damping thus effectively manages the driving conditions encountered. An almost essential optional equipment.

At a tourist pace, we still appreciate the ease of handling the German. The availability of flat allows you to roll on the torque and restart the machine at will. However, for more dynamics, we will stay on fifth gear..

Part-cycle

Tubular frame and supporting motor, geometry combining dynamics and stability, piloted suspensions…. the R 1200 RS takes up the essential DNA (apart from the telelever) of BMW machines with flat twin engines. Its quality inverted fork provides comfort and liveliness to the steering gear.

Braking

Vigor and rigor are found when braking. Powerful and progressive, the radial callipers deliver effective decelerations, whatever the pace. They also leave the pilot with a good feeling for the efforts to be applied. The rear clamp refines the passages in curves and is usefully associated with the front device to stop the machine.

Comfort / Duo

Our long trip reveals a successful ergonomics between GT and assertive dynamism. Particularly noteworthy given the small surface area of the fairing elements, the airflow protection greatly optimizes road capabilities. Suspension and seating comfort will also allow long stages. The passenger is also well received, benefiting from a comfy saddle and pleasant handles.

Top box and profiled suitcases with inner bags, tank bags, there is no shortage of travel accessories to extend distances even further.

BMW R1200RS luggage rack

Consumption

Throughout our dynamic journey, the BMW R 1200 RS has given us a average of 6 liters per 100 km. An honorable result in view of the displacement and performance of the machine. At a more leisurely pace, we can expect a range of 250 km per tank.

Conclusion

Elegant, slender, the R 1200 RS brilliantly perpetuates the GT-sport lineage with a flat twin engine. La Bavaroise seduces, as much by its efficiency as its pleasure, whatever the printed rhythm. Successful compromise between comfort and dynamism, the machine displays a dual personality with complementary qualities. Able to ride far with the protection of its half-fairing, the RS adds to the touring an aesthetic and a more sporty behavior. Available as standard against € 14,105 (+ € 240 in gray version), it will still cost € 1,445 to get the Touring Pack (including ESA, regulator, center stand….) And € 595 more for the Dynamic Pack (including DTC, piloting mode….) That is a total of 16,145 € to have an equipped machine. For our testing machines, all options, the bill even climbs to € 17,455…

We will oppose him the Kawasaki Z 1000 SX ABS, priced at 13,499 €, but equipped with classic suspensions. The Yamaha MT09 Tracer, € 9,999, can also represent a more accessible competitor, but logically behind in terms of finish and equipment. Finally, the Honda VFR1200F C-ABS DCT, € 15,099, is a less light alternative to the German slender.

In this little-traveled segment, the BMW R 1200 RS will appeal to fans of compact and dynamic road cars. Combining the best of two worlds, the Bavarian novelty recalls the know-how of the propeller firm for sport travel. For a possible return of gentlemen bikers ?
