BMW breaks record for worldwide motorcycle sales

The German motorcycle manufacturer BMW has made its – good – accounts for the year 2016: in all, 145,032 of its motorcycles were sold around the world, an increase of + 5.9% compared to the year last. So it’s a new record !

The R1200GS and Adventure always on top

According to the big German boss, the goal of 200,000 units in 2020 remains in the sights. Already in 2017, he expects the completely renewed range – in order to meet the new Euro 4 emissions standard – to allow BMW to reach new heights….

Right at the top of BMW motorcycle sales, the saw its score increase by + 7% (25,336 units) and that of its Adventure version climb by + 18.8% (21,391). Still on the third step of the podium, it declined by -11.9% (9,648).

Fourth last year, the disappears from the balance sheet of BMW Motorrad and gives way to (9016 ex, -5.8%) and (8835 ex, + 74.6%) which complete the Top "Funf" at the Bavarian manufacturer . In all, the S series of BMW motorcycles would have accumulated 23,686 sales. By deduction, the roadster would therefore have attracted 5,835 bikers (-9.9%).

The results of the F series are not communicated this year, nor those of the K series, but BMW is counting heavily on its future: calibrated for the United States, the Bagger will have the heavy responsibility of restarting BMW sales. across the Atlantic.

The Bagger for the USA, the G310GS for Asia

After Germany (24,894 units, + 4.5%), the country of Uncle Donald – Trump, not Duck! – indeed represents the second biggest market for BMW. However, its results there were not brilliant in 2016: 13,730 units, a decrease of -16.8% compared to 2015…

With its 13,350 motorcycles and maxiscooters sold on its territory, France has not gone far from second place this year (+ 6.4%, read our). BMW is pleased to have increased its sales by + 7% in Europe: 12,300 in Italy (+ 10.3%), 9,520 in Spain (+ 19.4%) and 8,782 in Great Britain (+ 7.1%) ). But where are the bad students hiding? ?!

Apparently not in Asia, where still low volumes allow monumental increases: + 52.7% in China, for example (but only 4,580 units), or + 42.1% in Thailand (1,819 units). In this corner of the globe, BMW is banking on its recent and unprecedented sound to continue to gain market share. Business to follow, stay connected !
