Gathered this morning in Paris as part of their four-monthly meeting, the members of the International Chamber of Automobile and Motorcycle Syndicates (CSIAM) announced a new major offensive in the field of pro two-wheel motorized lobbying, both vis-à-vis the authorities and the general public. Objective: to change the way we look at bikers…

Changing your outlook on bikers

This "pluri-annual" action is carried out in partnership with the main organizations representing the two (and three) motorized wheels sector: National Council of Automotive Professions (CNPA), National Federation of Cycle Trade and Repair. motocycle (FNCRM), French Federation of Angry Bikers (FFMC) and French Motorcycling Federation (FFM).

Dedicated site and round tables

The strong point of this "seduction operation" intended to improve the image of French bikers and scooter riders with the authorities, other road users and potential customers: the launch tomorrow (Thursday 12 September) of a site entirely dedicated to cause: .

This site, funded 100% by the CSIAM, aims to provide "objective and verifiable" information around four main areas: the social role of motorized two-wheelers, safety, the environment and pleasure. Six round tables (one per day) are also planned for the next Motorcycle Show in Paris from December 3 to 8, 2013:

  1. The economy of the sector
  2. Young people and access to the practice of motorized two-wheelers
  3. Innovation and security
  4. The feminine motorized two-wheeler
  5. Culture and passion
  6. Leisure and competition

In terms of safety, "we particularly wish to recall that the majority of injured in motorized two-wheelers are victims," said Thierry Archambault, deputy chairman of the CSIAM. Because according to an OpnionWay survey to be published tomorrow – to be followed naturally on MNC – the concept of risk is still very often associated with motorcycles and scooters, including among users of motorized two-wheelers..

3 PPE packs

CSIAM members (BMW, Can-Am, Yamaha, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Kymco, Sima, TGB, Triumph, Suzuki, Piaggio, Aprilia, Gilera, Moto Guzzi, Derbi and Sym) have also created an "informal group" bringing together manufacturers of personal protective equipment (PPE) to offer different packs to buyers of a motorcycle or scooter.

"About 95% of the PPE manufacturers have joined us", estimates Eric de Seynes, president of the 2 and 3-wheel motor branch of CSIAM and also big boss of Yamaha Motor France: Dainese, Alpinestars, Spidi, IXS, Furygan, Segura, Ixon, etc. will initially offer "three equipment packs" adapted to the vehicle purchased and to the use of the purchaser.

A positive image

These packs, offered as customer benefits "thanks to the financing of constructors, manufacturers and partner insurers", should therefore make it possible to equip oneself correctly without necessarily breaking the bank..

A market still at half mast in a gloomy context

While waiting for our full analysis of in July / August, the first figures show a further decrease of 15% over the first eight months of 2013: -22% for the 125 cc and -12% for the over 125 cc.

Return to purchasing power in 2003

The scooter market alone (all engine sizes combined) shows a decline of 18.5% with 40,892 registrations, while the motorcycle market is down 12.8% with 67,839 registrations.

The CSIAM therefore forecasts a 2013 market of around 250,000 registrations for the end of December, in an economic context that is still particularly gloomy: after six years of sharp decline or stagnation, the purchasing power of French households has returned to roughly the level of. ” ten years ago, analyzes the Bureau of Economic Information and Forecasts (BIPE)…

  • To be continued: Full analysis of July / August 2013

With the consequence not only of enhanced passive safety, but also a better image with users and public authorities: "in partnership with Road Safety, we would like to be able to communicate in 2014 on protected users to generate a positive image, rather than images of accidents ", hopes Thierry Archambault.

"There is also an intermediary category between the authorities and the general public, these are the local elected representatives", underlines Eric de Seynes: "however the motorized two-wheeler is systematically excluded from the categories of transport when we speak of urban development of type Grand Paris, Grand Lyon, etc. We must let them know about our efforts in terms of safety such as ABS or traction control ".

The world changes…

Finally, note that this – umpteenth! – initiative to improve the image of motorcyclists and scooter riders seems well born and should be able to bear fruit, insofar as it brings together in the same movement professionals of the sector (manufacturers, equipment manufacturers, dealers, insurers …), institutions (FFM) and associative activists who know the field – and its actors – by heart (FFMC).

Especially since the world is changing, as evidenced by these two simple observations: on the one hand, 91% of French people consider motorized two-wheelers as "a credible solution for travel", according to the OpinionWay survey to be published tomorrow. And on the other hand, "even if there are still bad habits at the DSCR, there is still progress", testifies Eric Thiollier, general delegate of the FFMC.

A file to follow naturally very closely on,, and: stay connected !
