The European motorized two-wheeler market (motorcycles, scooters and cyclos) fell by 23.8% in the first quarter of 2013 (-22.7% for more than 125 and -26.5% for cyclists), with a situation " particularly worrying in southern Europe ", notes ACEM.

The European motorized two-wheeler market (motorcycles, scooters and cyclos) fell by 23.8% in the first quarter of 2013 (-22.7% for more than 125 and -26.5% for cyclists), with a situation " particularly worrying in southern Europe ", notes ACEM.

While the European market had already lost -12.7% in 2012 (against), the 228,845 registrations of the first quarter of 2013 in Europe underline "the effects of the current economic crisis on consumer demand", continues the lobby of manufacturers in Brussels . With 115,470 registrations in March 2013, the drop in the motorized two-wheeler market in Europe reached -30.6% compared to March 2012.

"Economic and political instability"

ACEM explains in particular the acceleration of this negative trend by the fall in the market in Italy, the second-largest two-wheeler market in Europe (-37%), in Spain (-22.4%) and in Greece (-31, 3%). At the same time, Northern Europe is unable to compensate for this decline in Mediterranean markets: -16% in Germany, -21% in France, -32.8% in Poland, -24.4% in the Netherlands, -25% in Austria…

The particularly harsh winter has certainly played a role, illustrating "how much the weather conditions can influence the two-wheeler market", underlines the ACEM, but "such a deterioration in sales reflects a deeper economic and political instability which leads to a decline in consumer demand ".
